More challenges for retailers

Good morning.

Challenging conditions continue for Australian retailers, so much so that the National Retailers Association took the unusual step of writing to the RBA prior to their February 1 meeting to try and persuade them not to raise rates, and they didn't, so perhaps their letter worked!  Good news.

Another natural disaster is looming for Queensland in the form of tropical cyclone Yasi.  Hopefully this will not affect any of our already flood-affected members, it appears to be headed to Northern Queensland so batten down the hatches and let's hope it's not as bad as predicted, Queensland could do with a break.

The Australian Govt has agreed to a Productivity Commission enquiry into Australian Retail. This will allow organisations such as PMA to make submissions on your behalf to alert the Govt of factors influencing retailers in Australia. This was brought about following the pressures of the GST campaign. Just some of the factors that will be raised will include:

Bank charges

Rent

Freight costs

GST free imports

Labour costs

Once a framework is prepared PMA will be seeking your input for the enquiry.

If you are interested in participating ( and it is "our future' we are talking about!) please let me know via email.

Please take the time to listen to a PMA podcast by Jared Davis of MegaWood Mouldings (link below) it has some great marketing tips and it'll take up less than 5 minutes of your time!

Cheers

Peter Rose

On behalf of PMA Australia we wish you all the very best in your retirement.

"PhotoPlus has pleasure in announcing news from 3 of our ''senior'' members.

Effective from 31/01/11 Messers Hans Foeken [Fletchers Castle hill], Wolfgang Becker [Midcity Camera World, Hobart] & Peter De Janko [Greensborough Photo & Video] have decided to ''smell the roses'' & retire.

We at PhotoPlus wish them all well as they discover quality time away from specialty photographic retailing.

Wayne Styles."

There has been a change of direction for Shane Martin:

"Dear KEXDS Retailer,

as of today, 1st February 2011, I am now working for Australian Photo Supplies as National Sales and Marketing Manager.  I will still be responsible for the operations and marketing of the Kodak Express Digital Solutions on behalf of Kodak in Australia.

During March APS is running of series of Kodak Express Trade evenings that I along with the rest of the APS team will attend around Australia.  I look forward to outlining the plans to you on how we will continue to assist you in marketing your businesses.

You APS Manager will be contacting you shortly with details of these sessions; I do hope you will be able to attend one.  My changed email address is below, my mobile phone number remains the same.

Regards,
Shane Martin"

Extended Warranties and the new Australian Consumer Law

In a move that shows why the specialty photo industry is such a great one to be involved in Paul Shearer from
Camera House has generously offered to share the Clayton Utz video they are promoting to their members to help
them understand the changes the new Australian Consumer Laws affect the sales of Extended Warranties.

Thanks Paul for sharing this information.

Please pass this email on to your staff and get them to watch the video and discuss any issues they may have.

How direct importing is affecting one music retailer

Hi.  Here's an example of a member who is seriously affected by the direct import issues and can show some stats to support it.

Here's his website http://www.melmusic.com.au/

The survey is consistently running at 3 out of 5 (60%) responding that they ALWAYS buy directly from mostly USA (partly Hong Kong and China) and only buy their accessories here in Australia.

You can see on his website what effect this has had on his business  -  35% down year on year, 45% staff let go and no work experience kids, when he used to have 20.

He also commented that his last three trade ins were high-end electronic keyboards from a particular large brand, and ALL were 110 volt.

He's also a good example of how to use the FIA on a retailer website.

And finally: he has an interesting approach to the iPhone bar code reader app.  Just get a big fat texta and put a vertical line anywhere through the bar code and it won't read.  The consumer then comes to ask you for assistance!!  This, of course, works in the music products industry as few use bar code scanners at POS.
