Happy New Year

Our cousins in Qld. have really taken a beating over the last few weeks. Floods of "biblical proportions",loss of life and further rain forecasted, all contribute to a true disaster.PMA has contacted many of our members in the area,to see how they fared and how we may help.A full report follows below.

For those effected ,our thoughts are with you and hopefully it soon stops raining!

The GST issue has well and truly "boiled over"

Gerry Harvey has admitted he made a big mistake in underestimating the anger of consumers in suggesting they may have to pay more for goods imported under $1000.Consumers heard they would pay more to assist retailers. That was not going to work.

Late last year PMA (and PICA) joined a Fair Imports Alliance (a group of 10 like minded associations, including the Australian Retailers Association), which is actively promoting the case to Govt. to point out the total inequity of  allowing overseas organisations to have a 10% advantage over local retailers.Unfortunately that point has been swamped by the consumer backlash. I  attended a further meet of this group in Melbourne this week and a report will follow.

Australian Consumer Law

Earlier in the week we sent all members links to websites explaining the major changes to consumer law included in the new legislation. If you missed the email the links are again included below. You need to understand how these new laws will impact your business. The links to the video presentations provide a clear uncomplicated explanation as to what's involved.Take the time to view them and share with your staff .

Interesting times in the retailing industry, all the best for a good start to 2011.

Queensland Flood Reports

Queensland Flood Disaster

Which PMA Members have been effected?

Bundaberg Camera House - Bryan Fagerlund reports that Scott Alison's business is fine.

Chinchilla 1 Hour Photos - Nev Volker reports that Vicki Abraham's business is safe from the flooding.

Dalby Colour Innovations - Nev Volkers business and home have survived the floods in Dalby although there were some nervous times as the water was creeping up behind the store in the first week of the New Year. The local Harvey Norman store in town had 1 meter of water through it. As of today, we were unable to reach Nev and Nathan as the store had been closed for business due to flooding in Dalby.

Milne Photography and Framing, Dalby - John Milne reports that his business is safe from the flooding as thankfully his business is not in a flood prone area. Residents in Dalby are doing it tougher.

Duggan Camera Centre, Warwick - Noelene reports that the business will remain safe although access to homes around Warwick is dire, and many roads are cut off by the flood waters. As we spoke she was hurrying to get home before the flood waters blocked the access to her home.

Snapshots and Music, Biloela - Tania reports that the business is safe from flooding and they have seen many new faces visit the store from flood affected areas of Theodore and Mount Morgan. The store has printed many photos of flood waters and damaged goods for insurance purposes.

The Foto Centre, Biloela - Phillip Casey reports that the flooding is one hour from away and his business is safe.

Brown Gully Photography, Roma - Nellie Brown reports that they have been very lucky in that they have not received so much rain as other regions and consequently their business is safe from the flood waters. However the town is very much cut-off from food supplies and their suppliers.

MSP Photography, Rockhampton - (Ben Holgate) .The business is fine, however flood waters need to subside before they can access out of town areas.

Aspects Designer Framing, Rockhampton - closed for business until 12th January (Tracy Hardy).

Emerald Photos - Kerwin Ross reported that Liz Speed had been badly affected by the flood waters and that her Noritsu Lab was underwater. IPS and Noritsu have been in contact with Liz to offer assistance.

Emerald Arts & Craft - Mick Pankhurst reports that one section of his workshop has gone under the flood waters. Thankfully he built his workshop on a split level to accommodate large pieces of work, and he was able to move all his machinery to the top level. Computer records, customers work and machinery all remained fairly safe, but Mick did lose hundreds of sheets of mattboard and other materials. There appears to be uncertainty amongst the businesses and residents as to how much of their losses will be met by the insurance companies and Govt subsidy's at this stage.

Owen Camera House, Toowoomba - Cathy reported to the Camera House Head Office that there was devastation in the CBD area, particularly one block from the main street. Ruthven Street was "like a river, but thankfully the water just lapped at the front doors".

Barry the Picture Framer, Toowoomba - not able to contact

Murrays Art & Framing, Toowoomba - the son of P.D Granfield reported on the evening news 11/1/11 that the business was flooded and all had been lost.

Integrity Colour Photos, Toowoomba - Megan reported that while their business was located in a shopping centre on the higher side of town, it was the businesses in the CBD that were being flooded, and the township was very nervous as more rain was predicted for today.

Photopro, Toowoomba - Phil Gresham reports that Kerwin Ross and his business are doing OK.

Cyrils Camera Centre, Toowoomba - Wayne Styles reported that this business had suffered only slight damage.

Chapman & Bailey Studio, Brisbane- Mark Chapman reported that their QLD Studio is 100 meters from the Brisbane River and they were on standby. All entries to the business had been sandbagged on 11/1/11, but heavy machinery was not able to be moved. At the time of the report on 11/1/11 pm, the water was only 50meters away from the business.

Fotofast, Brisbane - Phil Gresham reported that most of central Brisbane was evacuating, although his business in the Myer Centre should remain dry.

I know everyone from the PMA family will wish these stores the very best.

Great 'Bring Your Photos to Life' entry

Tania from the Yamba Photo Store sent through a link to her entry for the Bring Your Photos to Life competition. We love getting newsy items like this... Keep them coming!

Hi Kathy & Peter,

Hope you and your team had a lovely Christmas!!!

Thought I'd flag with you that we've entered the Bring Your Photos to Life Comp.  Although we weren't sure if we'd get time to pull it together, we were keen to get involved and I'm pleased to say thanks to the down time over Christmas public holidays, with a day to spare we've actually uploaded our entry onto youtube.  It was great fun to make and it stars one of our customers, Joan Barnett, who is in her mid '90s!  We came up with this particular angle when we considered that its customers like Joan who come into the shop absolutely bewildered as to how to turn a CD/DVD sent to them by well intentioned relatives, into something meaningful.  We've taken a light hearted look at it but hopefully some important messages come through.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU0k1c5l01o

Thank you for all your help this year and we do really appreciate your efforts.  It's awesome to be kept informed of industry news through the newsletter especially, not to mention the confidence in knowing the organisation is such a strong advocate for our industry.

Regards & Happy New Year!

PMA 2011 (US) rebranded as CLIQ 2011

Taking a leaf from the Aussie model of PMA shows, PMA USA are relaunching their annual show and allowing access to the general public for the first time.
CLIQ 2011 - not just a name re-brand but a complete strategy change.
CLIQ is a 24/7 commitment from the association to retailers, pro photographers, specialty labs and, importantly, photo enthusiasts.
This commitment to enthusiasts shows how important this sector is to our industry and PMA's commitment to keep driving them to specialty stores.
For a full run through of the plans and targets for CLIQ check out this weeks DIMACast
http://pmanewsline.com/2011/01/11/discover-what-cliq-is-and-how-it-will-benefit-you-on-the-dimacast-and-imaging-executive-podcast/

CLIQ is also targeting customers through social networking site Facebook with photo competitions and information being run and added constantly. with nearly 500 members joining on its first day it looks like it has certainly captured the public's interest.

CLIQWorld.com looks to be a site that needs to be monitored on a regular basis to see how we can also benefit from the information being provided.

It looks like this years show in Vegas has become a 'must attend' event.

Ruslan Kogan tries to launch 'Trade Leaks' to 'expose' Retail bad practices -

by Glynn Lavender (Editor)

In early December Ruslan Kogan, owner of Kogan Technologies, launched a Wikileaks inspired site called TradeLeaks. www.tradeleaks.com
His intention was to 'expose' bad retail practices in Australia and 'educate' customers so they can make 'educated' buying decisions.
The site is set up with no mention of Kogan but a quick scan through the many posts on the site certainly shows that the people using the site are not fooled as to who is controlling the site.
If you understand Kogan's business model then you can see where his thought process was when it came to starting up this site.
The reality of web 2.0 though is you should be careful of setting up a site without due consideration to moderation.
Within the first day the site had a lot of 'leaks' - some well intentioned, some outright malicious.
The site had over 275,000 page views within days of launching - but for the average consumer I feel this is a site that would have few repeat visitors.
Nearly every 'leak', legitimate or not, is full of comments of abuse, swearing and outright filth.

Trade Leaks was featured on a recent segment of Sunrise on TV. I guess it shows they didn't delve too deeply into what was actually being said on the site.

It will be interesting to see if Kogan can rest this site back from the trolls and get it back to where he originally planned it on going.

Whilst this site has its obvious issues it certainly is a glimpse into the future where dissatisfied customers will have a forum to espouse to the world their woes.

Monitoring web talk about your business is going to become an important part of your daily routine.

New Australian Consumer Laws

Good afternoon and a happy New Year to you all!

The new Australian Consumer Law has now been introduced. This has been overlooked by many, however it will impact all our members, and needs to be understood.

Luke Valentine from WA provided the following:

"am sure that our members will all be having as much trouble as I had in finding understandable information about the amendment to the Trade Practices Act that came into force on January 1st. I went looking for the act and it is undeniably written by lawyers. I did find the Australian Consumer Law  website which has useful snippets of information but digging further I found the pot of gold that all our members need to read:

http://www.consumerlaw.gov.au/content/Content.aspx?doc=home.htm

1) I would suggest you print this out and study it as your customers will get to know their rights very quickly

Peter Michael has also provided the following helpful links:

Videos (ACCC) & SA Govt

Legislation:

 2) The two videos are mandatory viewing, and give  a good overview of what has been passed into law.

This new legislation replaces the Trade Practices Act and also replaces many State consumer laws.

PICA and PMA are arranging meetings with suppliers to gain a better understanding on your behalf as to specific issues that will follow from this new law.

Best wishes

Peter Rose
