NSW PMA Xmas party a "hit".
Any night on Sydney Harbour is enjoyable, especially sitting down to good food, then some fun with a trivia quiz, followed by dancing and catching up with friends.
John Ralph and the NSW committee ably backed up by Kathy and Rebecca at PMA again organised an enjoyable night which had members travelling from Scone and Wollongong to join in the night. It was also good to see our 2009 Young Achiever of the Year in Brenton Watkins of Ted's, as well as the 2006 winner Amy Jennings, as part of the Ted's table. Strong representations were there from Paxtons and DigiDirect.
Special thanks go to our NSW sponsors in: Canon, Fujifilm, Adeal, CR Kennedy, Independent Photographic Supplies, Profile Products, Maxwell International and Kodak without whom the night would not have been possible.
All NSW and Vic Xmas photos will be posted on our website Monday www.pmaaustralia.com.au
On a sad note we were advised of the planned retirement of Wolfgang Becker from MidCity Camera World in Hobart sometime next year. Wolfgang and his wife Karen have been active members of the photo industry for over 30 years and are regarded by many in the trade as examples of a well run specialty photo store.
We will miss your good nature and friendliness Wolfgang!!
On behalf of all PMA members we wish you both well.
PMA Qld have their Xmas party planned for Saturday 4th December at the Brisbane Jazz Club at Kangaroo Point on the Brisbane river. Michelle O'Brien at Ascot Photo and Digital has done a great job for Qld Chairman Andrew Mason in again planning what will be a terrific evening.
Until next week
Cheers

It's time we better supported the little guy | |
Editorial from Connected Women
Posted on: Tuesday, 30 November 2010
By Lorna Brett
I heard a great deal about the many difficulties the imaging industry is battling when I attended the PMA Digital Life Expo earlier this year; the biggest being how it can match the competition posed by large CE retailers who have entered the imaging market, and are able to undercut prices. But as is so often the case - seeing is believing. And over the past week I've seen first-hand the effect the "big guys" are having on the small, family owned camera and imaging stores.
When I set out to get some photos enlarged last week, I assumed I wouldn't have to travel far to find my local camera store - but I was wrong. I found that three digital imaging stores in my surrounding suburbs had "For Lease" signs in their windows. Eventually, I travelled three suburbs away to find a specialist store that was still open for business (and judging by the tired exterior and interior, I'm safe in assuming that business isn't booming).
Yes, I could have gone to my local Harvey Norman or K-Mart to get my photos enlarged and they probably would have been half, or even a quarter of the price. But I had technical questions that I wanted answered by a professional, and above all, I trust the experience that comes with being a specialist.
It's not that I doubt the quality of Harvey Norman's offering, and whilst its prices are definitely attractive, in this instance I was willing to pay that little bit extra for the peace of mind that comes from having a professional complete the job.
We need to support the small businesses in our communities, because in doing so we support the families reliant on them. This week, my eyes have been opened to how tough business is for imaging specialists and they'll now be my first stop when I need a photo enlarged, a canvas printed or a new digital camera - and I hope they will be for you too.
Their place in the photographic industry is just as important as the "big guys." |

| Tasco score hole in one |
There are important issues in the Photographic Industry and there are those that are never forgotten. One of these events occurred recently with Kevin Johnson of Tasco scoring a hole in one at the NSW Open (Pro-Am) at the The Vintage, Hunter Valley. To score a hole in one is special enough, to do it at a Pro-Am with "serious" golfers around much have been truly rewarding. Great work Kevin!!
In future does this mean Wednesdays will see you "attending a course"?
