Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
CCAMEach January is recognized as Cervical Health Awareness Month. Each year in the U.S. approximately 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 4,000 lives are lost as a result. This doesn't take into account the many thousands of women who have cervical abnormalities and abnormal Pap tests for reasons other than cancer, but who still undergo expensive and inconvenient follow-up exams and treatments.

Cervical cancer is caused by specific types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common infection that almost everyone who is sexually active will have at some point. There are vaccines that block the types of HPV most often found with cervical diseases, and screening tests (such as Pap tests and HPV tests) that can identify women most at risk. We can prevent cervical cancer!

If you are interested in more information or receiving the HPV vaccination, you can contact Renaissance Women's Healthcare at (479) 582-3366 or on the web at http://mana.md/rwh/index.html.

Follow these easy steps for prevention!!

    *    Vaccinate early (females and males ages 9-26 are eligible)
    *    Pap test regularly (beginning at age 21)
    *    HPV test when recommended

At Renaissance Women's Healthcare, Dr. Kathleen Paulson and Dr. Janet Titus provide First Wellness Visit and Pre-College Vaccinations for young women.

MANA Healthy TV on YouTube
MANA has expanded their educational offerings for the entire community with the launch of an educationalYouTube YouTube Channel, MANA HealthyTV.

Our goal is to build the video library focusing on topics that seem to be most prevalent and beneficial to the viewers.  In some cases, the video may be a simple question & answer session and in others, we may do tours of certain facilities within MANA.

The latest video to be added to the channel comes from Dr. Rasmussen discussing the importance of toy safety and safe gift giving for children.  This is in addition to a few others with topics that cover smoking cessation and flu & cold season.  The videos will be linked through our social media outlets on Facebook and twitter as well as on the front page of the MANA website.  We're looking forward to using this as a very useful educational and marketing tool.

You can view the HealthyTV Channel by visiting youtube.com/manahealthytv.  Please keep checking back for weekly updates!

Healthy Winter Recipes

So, its nearly mid-January and our area still has not seen any real blustery, Winter days yet. Like many
Meatloaf
Meatloaf & Mashed Potatoes
people, we think there are certain foods that just seem perfect certain times of year. Winter is the one time of year to indulge in hearty, warm foods - soups, stews, casseroles and slow-cooked delectable meals. Sometimes with these meals, comes guilt from all the heavy ingredients used to make them perfect.

Souflee
Goat Cheese Souffle
This month, we offer three Winter recipes - breakfast, lunch and dinner - and believe it or not, they're somewhat good for you. When you click on the link to each recipe, be sure to scroll to the bottom of each recipe page to get all the nutritional information.

First up is breakfast - a goat cheese, sun-dried tomato, and roasted garlic souffle.

Buffalo Burger
Next, we have a lunch recipe that's sure to please - buffalo burger with pickled onions. Buffalo meat is a low-fat alternative to beef, and is becoming increasingly available. To round out the day, we offer a classic meat loaf dinner recipe, revamped so you save big in the calorie and fat departments. Plus, get a fiber fix courtesy of the oatmeal and potato skins.

Lowell the Dog
LowellThis month, we thought we'd close out the newsletter with a very light-hearted story about a puppy named Lowell.  Back in December, a sweet little dog was found at the Pediatric Clinic in Lowell.  He was wearing a collar, but had no ID tag and had not been microchipped.  The staff at the Lowell clinic put out flyers trying to find the dog's owner - with no luck.  One of our pediatricians was kind enough to take the pup home until permanent arrangements were made . . . and they were.

A staff member who also works at the Pediatric Clinic, is now the happy new owner of Lowell the Dog.  She's taken him to the vet to get his check-up and vaccinations and at the time of his visit, he was estimated to be around 10-weeks old, which would make him around 12-weeks old now.

His new owner says Lowell is very smart, well-behaved and laid back.  He loves his new home and riding in the car and loves having siblings to keep him entertained.   He's made friends at Doggy Daycare and in true Terrier fashion, loves to play fetch, chase remote controlled cars and police the squirrel population in his backyard.  He loves visiting the Pediatric Clinic when he can to say hello to the doctors and staff who helped him find a home!

He has a ton of supporters and we're very happy he found a forever home!
