News from ECSL

East Coast School of Languages

Halifax, Nova Scotia

This is one of the seven Quality English schools in Canada.

Canada

East Coast School of Languages

Their News is that they have moved to wonderful new premises.

After 13 years of providing ESL training to international students in the Halifax marketplace, East Coast School of Languages literally found itself bursting at the seams. Growing from a humble start of 3 students, 3 teachers and 3 classrooms into an operation boasting 25 staff, 19 classrooms and close to 200 students, ECSL realized they needed to secure a new facility that would bring everyone together and also reflect the organization's respect for diverse cultural practices.

"We're thrilled with our new space," says Sheila Nunn, one of the owners of ECSL who also acts as the Director of Marketing & Business Development for the school. "We had grown so rapidly that we found ourselves split-up over four floors. We moved to be better, not bigger as we feel we have the ideal size of school now for staff and students. Now that we are all in one cohesive unit we're finding it really adds to the community and family feel of our school. It feels as personal and friendly now as it did when we were half the size."

The students agree with Nunn's assessment, "The new place is definitely more comfortable than the last one," explains Gabriel Cirielli, an ECSL student from Venezuela. "We all start classes at the same time and finish together, so it makes it easier to make plans with friends at the school and be able to enjoy Halifax together."

Why do you think your school is a Quality school?

At Boston Academy of English is a hands-on environment where the owners, teachers, and staff work to make every student comfortable.  We understand that each student is an individual, and his or her satisfaction is our utmost concern in all facets of the program - housing, immigration, and activities, as well as the academic life, all of which combine to determine a positive student experience.

What made you join QE?

There are so many choices for students and agencies, we wanted to become involved with an organization that stands up for "boutique" schools such as BAE and gives the consumer a distinct choice.  Chain schools do what they do very well, but we feel education can and should be more than just a numbers game.  Teaching happy students is a very satisfying endeavour, and one that all the QE schools believe in!

Why would you recommend QE from what you know so far?

To my knowledge Quality English is the only organization of its kind on an international scope...if QE's ideals appeal to agencies and schools, then it's "one-stop" shopping for both.  The missions are very well organized and productive, and also more intimate than the huge conferences, which only makes sense when you consider the type and quality of product being offered.  The name says it all!

What are the main reasons to recommend Boston to a foreign student wishing to learn English?

It's truly a top world destination...an exciting, vibrant city that has it all but is small enough to be a manageable, "walking city".  Close to the mountains and the seashore, there are four distinct seasons, each with its own charm. The Boston area is home to close to 100 colleges and universities, so pursuing a degree after studying English is very common. And, of course, it is said that the best English in the U.S. is spoken here (!).

QE School Visit

Quality Control visits to Ireland

Classically a non-marketing season for QE, June onwards is a chance to visit schools when they are really busy...it is the best time to see schools in action. The QE schools must have a 'quality control' check every three years - and one important part of this is meetting the students and asking what they think about their experience.

ATC (Bray) DublinThe sea was sparkling and so were the students - all enjoying their summer courses. The school was looking magnificent in the sunshine and on arrival there was a warm welcome from Christina Moore at reception. The view over the promenade and beach was as I remembered it and it was good to be there in sunny June. The school now has four buildings all in a row (they are old buildings with original 19th century features) of which three are school classrooms and one a residence. This provides twenty-one classrooms altogether.

Afterwards The Linguaviva Centre welcomed me to their school - a chance once again to ask students about their courses and activities and to look around. As in July 2008 (the last quality control visit) the Linguaviva Centre is located in an elegant Georgian building, within walking distance of the centre and all the main cultural sites of Dublin. It is an attractive area of Dublin not far from St Stephen's Green. It has a very fine red front door and this image is used as a striking Logo and also in the school's publicity.

Agents gave some good feedback: "It's easy to work with Linguaviva and I'm sure of the quality."

"There are nearly no complaints, but in case there are they are dealt with very fast and efficiently."

Then Cork English College  was next in turn. Now in grand new premises along the river from the old school, it is almost unrecognisable except for the fact that all the same faces are there at reception to greet you. My visit was literally only a couple of days after the move but despite this the school was up and running in its usual professional way. Once again the school succeeded in reaching a very high level of student satisfaction and this was evident from the positive comments expressed by the students interviewed. The students were full of enthusiasm for the changes. No longer having to have 'break' in the corridor, the students now have a large student lounge and other spaces and places to be either for work or leisure.

Cork English College made the most of the opportunity that presented itself when the new building came on the market. It is in the process of transforming itself into an upmarket state-of-the art language school as it settles in to this new location.
