As I visit your child's classroom, I observe caring teachers who are providing our students with purposeful learning experiences. Please carve time out of your busy schedule to conference with your child's teacher to review evidence of your child's learning as well as celebrate their successes.

LITERACY
In the month of November, our students are really flexing their reading muscles, as we go deeper with thinking within, beyond, and about the text. Thinking within the text requires readers to process the print on the page, solving words and recognizing elements such as characters, setting, and conflict. When we move to thinking beyond the text, we are analyzing characters based on their actions and what they say, making connections between what we are reading and our lives and the world that help us understand the text better. Finally, we think about the text. With this, we consider how the author conveys meaning to us, analyze the author's word choice, and evaluate the what the author's point of view may be. This, in turn, begins to impact us as writers, too. When you read at home with your child, consider sharing conversation together in these areas! It is a challenging, yet powerful way to look at what we read. As always, thank you for sharing your precious children with us!
Please feel free to call or e-mail me if I can answer any questions regarding your child's literacy development, and/or our curriculum!

COUNSELOR CORNER
Spotlight on Character
Parenting as Positive Role Models Series:
(tips from the Child Advocacy Center)
Be a caped crusader. Be on the lookout for injustice, unkindness, prejudice, or poor manners that thread through the daily lives of you and your kids. Rectify what you can on the spot. At the very least, discuss incidents later in private.
Give yourself a time-out. Borrow this age-old disciplinary method and use it to give yourself a breather when life with kids puts a strain on your good nature. It can be as simple as closing the bathroom door and taking ten deep breaths. You deserve a break every day.

This month, the children will be learning about their five senses, healthy eating and taking care of their bodies. Teaching your child to develop healthy habits at a young age is the foundation for living a healthy life.
Kinder- In kindergarten literacy, we are writing personal stories across pages, stretching out sounds and writing sight words in a snap! We are also in the middle of our busy math and reading assessment period. We are looking forward to having a couple of guest speakers this month as well!
