U.S. Consumer Confidence And Spending Drop To Lowest Levels In 2012

Consumer confidence and spending data suggest the U.S. economic recovery is continuing to lose momentum. The consumer confidence index by the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters recently fell to its lowest level since December, and the Commerce Department said consumer spending in May was the weakest since November.

Retail Shopping Is Taking Off at the Airport

U.S. airports have been expanding their retail offerings beyond the traditional duty-free shops and newsstands, adding global brands with smaller-than-mall-store selections but comparable prices.

 

Orange County's Retail Centers' Sales Grew Faster Than Nation's Last Year

The 14 retail centers in Orange County posted a 6.5% increase in combined taxable sales for 2011 of $4.9 billion. It is a stronger increase than the national level, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers, which found that national retail sales increased 4.2%, to reach $2.3 trillion last year.

 

Restaurant Chains Tweak Unit Layouts To Continue Growing In Tough Real Estate Market

Retailers Report Finds Growth in Grocery Segment

There were only modest shifts in position among the nation's very largest retailers last year, according to STORES 2012 Top 100 Retailers report, with Wal-Mart staying at the No. 1 spot, followed by Kroger, Target, Walgreens and Costco. Indicative of a supermarket growth trend seen throughout the report.  

 

Emerging Markets More Attractive To Retail Developers Now

Retail center developers are finding the environment to be more favorable in emerging markets. In mature markets, such as the U.S. and Europe, they are adopting more of a defensive stance. The financial crisis in Europe and the U.S.' lagging economy are big drivers behind that trend.
