Enjoy Autumn with Peace of Mind
Storm window installation

Projects such as storm window installation save money while protecting & beautifying your home.

The days are growing shorter and crisper. There's a chill in the air. Most of the maintenance projects on your home during this time will focus on preparing for the winter months that bring a host of harsh weather like heavy rain, flooding, snow, and ice.

Autumn Home Maintenance Tips:

Are You Throwing Money Out the Window?

To keep the bad weather and drafty air out and the warmth in, weather-stripping and caulking are two maintenance projects that are worth their weight in gold because they stretch the amount of energy needed to heat the house. All weather-stripping that appears worn or torn should be replaced. Old caulking should be removed before adding any new material in order for it to be effective.

Having Trouble Breathing In Your Own Home?

Changing out your air and furnace filters, as well as vacuum forced air register and duct work is important, but most heating system work should be done by a professional. They can inspect and clean the heating unit thoroughly and properly. Cleaning all ducts in the home will remove all the dust that built up during the hot and dry months that can irritate people living in the house.

Your Best Protection from Hurricanes and Winter Storms

Since your roof is your greatest shelter during storms, there are several of issues to address before the bad weather arrives.

  • Make sure the roof, gutters, and downspouts are clear of leaves, branches and other debris. Doing so will prevent damage due to the weight of debris.
  • Roof vents should be cleaned and checked to ensure that they are fully operational.
  • Any signs of loose or damaged shingles as well as other problem spots with other roofing materials must be addressed immediately.

Keeping the Animals Out of Your House

Animals are also getting ready for the winter months. Ensure that birds, chipmunks, squirrels or bats do not decide to make your attic or basement their vacation destination of choice. Locate any entrance holes and seal them up. It may also require a visit from your local pest control company.

Don't Let Those Pipes Burst!

Frozen pipes can become a problem during winter months. Take preventative measures before the low temperatures set in. Here's what you can do:

    1. Insulate pipes in your home's crawl space and attic.
    2. Wrap pipes with heat tape or thermostatically-controlled heat cables.
    3. Identify any possible leaks and seal them with caulk or insulation.

Joke Corner
The Steeple Painter

The church steeple in Port Gibson is very high and was being painted on a rather hot day.

The painter was about half way down and, as the steeple was widening out, was taking more paint. The painter felt that he might not have enough paint to finish.

Since he was hot and tired, and did not care to make another trip to the ground, he decided to stretch the amount of paint by adding some paint thinner to it.

When finished, he lowered himself to the ground and went about cleaning up. Then he looked up to see the results of his work and noted that the area with the thinned paint looked decidedly different.

He was pondering about what to do about it when the sky turned dark and there was a lightning flash and loud thunderclap.

Suddenly, a booming voice came down from the sky: "REPAINT, AND THIN NO MORE!
