SLHT update

Oxleas Chief Executive Stephen Firn

You will be aware of developments at South London Healthcare NHS Trust (SLHT) which has recently become the first NHS trust to be placed in the Government's Unsustainable Provider Regime.

Oxleas Chief Executive Stephen Firn said: "We are working with the administrator, commissioners and other providers to inform the proposals for sustainable and safe local services. As part of this we will be involved in discussions about the ownership of the hospital sites and how the services are delivered in the future."

Services at SLHT continue to operate as normal while the administrator develops his recommendations. We will continue to provide the services we do currently at the three SLHT sites (Queen Mary's Hospital, Princess Royal University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital).

Survey of GPs' views of Oxleas services

A few years ago, we carried out a survey of 150 local GPs to gather your views on how our services should develop. We found this information extremely useful and made several changes as a result including:

  • Providing patient lists to practices
  • Establishing a programme of masterclasses
  • Working to improve communication between our clinicians and GPs

We have decided to repeat this survey to ensure our services develop in the ways you think will be best for patients and also easiest for you to use.

We have commissioned an independent research company, Capita, to carry out a survey to learn more about your priorities for improvements to the mental health, learning disability and community health services we provide.

An interviewer from Capita will contact you to conduct an interview. If the time is unsuitable, they will set up a more convenient time to call you back. The survey is also available on-line and you will receive details of how to access this by post. Everything you tell Capita will, of course, be treated in confidence and no identifying information will be passed to us or anyone else.

Stroke referral form advice

The new Stroke Rehabilitation Service started earlier this year. Please continue to refer all patients, including stroke survivors, on the existing Community Rehabilitation Team referral form - a copy of which you can find by clicking here.

Please destroy any copies of the Bexley 'Stroke Rehabilitation Service Referral Form' that you may have. If you have any queries, please contact Alec Sutton, Head of Long Term Conditions and Therapies, Bexley Community Health Services by email at alec.sutton@oxleas.nhs.uk or call 020 8319 7074.

TB services

The TB team, which covers Bexley, has been instrumental in developing a dedicated TB clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich.

This has had a significant and positive impact on patient experience with the following outcomes: Out Patients Department Clinic waiting times have reduced by at least 50%; treatment completion rates have increased by 10%; more patients can be seen in each clinic which has increased productivity and the streamlined service means happier patients therefore reduced 'lost to follow-up' cases.

Busy District Nurses

Our District Nurses completed a record number of contacts in June - 14,066. The District Nursing Team have experienced a steady growth in demand over the last year. Referrers are reminded that all referrals should be directed through the central booking desk. Click here for details.

New lead for Children and Young People Service

We have appointed a new Lead for Children and Young People services. Teresa McDonald, who will based at Erith Health Centre, will incorporate the Sexual Health Lead and management of the School Health Service in this new role. You can email Teresa at teresa.mcdonald@oxleas.nhs.uk or call her on 01322 357919.

New health check template for GPs
Mark Bradley

We are launching a new health check template for GP practices using the Vision patient information system. We already have EMIS web templates for those who have switched to this patient record system.

This will assist practices to deliver better quality health checks for clients with a learning disability in line with the Directed Enhanced Service (DES) requirements. It will also improve the standard of referrals to specialist services, reducing the likelihood of referrals being returned for more information thus reducing waiting times.

Oxleas is supporting all GP practices in Bexley, to participate in the DES scheme. A DES is the name given to directions from the Government for GPs to be rewarded for doing extra work to improve the health of their patients. The Department of Health provides extra funding for local services to complete additional work to meet the unique health needs of their local population. For more information, contact Mark Bradley, Health Facilitation Coordinator (Learning Disability Services), Bexley and Greenwich.

Email: mark.bradley@oxleas.nhs.uk

Tel: 020 8269 3349 or 020 8269 3300 (this second number can contact Mark's mobile).
