Important Vaccine Requirement Change for 6/1/10                    April 2010
If you plan on boarding / training/ grooming/ daycare
with us this summer PLEASE READ!

Greetings!
I hope that this letter finds you and your wet-nosed friend enjoying the beautiful spring like weather (and that the floods are behind us!).  I am writing to you because we are implementing an important change in our vaccination policy.  In an effort to keep all of your friends safe and healthy, as of June 1, 2010, we are requiring that all four-legged visitors to our facility are vaccinated for Canine Influenza Virus.   We are proud that we are setting the standards for safe pet care.   We know that not every doggie daycare, boarding or grooming facility will require this until there is an actual outbreak of this virus in MA. (Recently, there have been some confirmed cases in MA at Angell Memorial Hospital.)
In accordance with our philosophy of never settling for anything less than excellence in pet care, we have chosen to be proactive.  What we know is that this virus has traveled across the United States and that healthy dogs can pass this virus.  This is much like when your buddy comes to work and "feels fine" but the next day has the flu.... and what comes next is that everyone in the office has the flu.  The problem with this particular virus is that in many cases it can turn into pneumonia and can be very costly to treat with supportive care. This may include many trips to the veterinarians office for x-rays, fluid therapy, antibiotics and even hospital admission for oxygen therapy and intensive care.   We also know that vaccinated dogs can still get the virus but in most cases recover in a few days as opposed to the unvaccinated dogs that can be sick for 30-45 days. Therefore, we are forced to make the smart decision and protect our furry friends from this contagious virus that now has been seen in ALL of our neighboring states.  The latest outbreak was in NH and we are confident that we have made the correct decision to require this vaccine.
We appreciate your business and for trusting your friends with us.  We hope to be your boarding facility this summer, but we realize that other facilities that are taking a wait and see approach may win you over for now.  For me, it is too much of a gamble to take with your pets health and to put blinders on and pretend that the virus doesn't exist.  I have never put my head in the sand and ignored something that could potentially harm your pet because I respect and appreciate that you trust my facility to do the best we can by your family members and I will not start now.  If you have questions you may email me directly at doglady@jmk9.com .

Concerned about your pet and forever grateful for your patronage,

Policy Change - Canine Influenza Vaccine Required

Because of the seriousness of the recent data and information provided to us regarding the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), we are changing our protocols for all dogs that use our facility here at J.M. Pet Resort. Effective June 1, 2010, we will require that all of our four-legged clients be vaccinated with this new vaccine to minimize the spread of CIV.

"Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection that has a significant impact on dogs housed in shelters, kennels and communal facilities," said Cynda Crawford, D.V.M., Ph.D., University of Florida, Clinical Assistant Professor of Shelter Medicine. "The availability of a vaccine can help prevent the medical, financial and emotional costs associated with this new virus.

In the interest of helping our clients to meet this new requirement and keep their dogs safe and healthy, we have teamed up with The North Main Street Veterinary Clinic to provide a low cost vaccination clinic.  The vaccine requires a series of two shots, 2-3 weeks apart. We have already held two successful clinics which were completely sold out.

This is a 2-series vaccine. The cost of each vaccine is $25. You must call or email us to make an appointment and prepay the $50 vaccination fee or if your dog is in the facility the days the vaccines are administered (for doggie daycare, boarding or grooming), just let us know, prepay the $50 and we can administer the vaccines without you being present.

The clinics will be held on the following days:
 Wednesday - 4/28/10 from 11 AM - 1 PM (first shot)
 Wednesday - 5/12/10 from 11 AM - 1 PM (second shot)

To book your appointments, please call or email: doglady@jmk9.com

 Afraid of Over Vaccinating?
Rabies:
Please remember that you do not need to give a rabies vaccine every year. If you get a rabies vaccine before it expires
the following year your pet qualifies for a three year vaccine- so don't be late!

Distemper Vaccines:
Many Animal hospitals now carry a two year distemper vaccine that you can ask for.  This is an important vaccine that protects your pet from mulitple viruses.  It is perfectly reasonable to ask for a titre  which  we will allow as proof of vaccination.

Lifestyle Vaccines:
Lyme Vaccines
This is an annual vaccine that is important in our area because we are seeing so many cases of Lymes disease.  Of course if you have an apartment dog that never sees the outside you may re-consider this one, however most dogs potty outside and those pesky ticks ......

Canine Cough
This vaccine is lifestyle vaccine to prevent the spread of cold like symptoms for dogs that are socialized or in the presence of mulitple dogs. For example, boarding facilites, doggie daycare and grooming.  We recommend this vaccine every six months.

Canine Influenza Virus
We will be requiring this annually.  As new data is published we will continue to adjust our protocal with the help and sound advice of mulitiple veterinarians.
