Barrier Brewing Night

Hello!

Tomorrow night we'll be visited by New York's newest brewery, Barrier Brewing Company.  Brewers Evan and Craig are both graduates of the Sixpoint school of brewing, and in the year they've been brewing their own beers, they've churned out a number of amazing, style-specific beers from stouts to pales, to Belgian and English examples.  From a small 1 barrel (31 gallon) brewing system out in Oceanside, Long Island, they've managed to brew some incredibly complex and delicious beer.  Tomorrow night we'll be "sampling" 8 of the aforementioned ales, chatting with the boys, and generally being merry.  Join us!

Just to whet your appetite, here's a rundown of what you'll see and taste tomorrow night.

Barrier Greenroom Pale Ale

Their take on a classic American Pale Ale. Citrusy, Grapefruity American hops, a light biscuity cracker-like malt bill.  Great balance, an easy drinker for sure.

Barrier Antagonist ESB

I like to think of this one as an Americanized English Extra Special Bitter.  All the round, bready, caramelly english malt character you'd expect from an ESB, but with a crisp finish that begs another sip.

Barrier Ruthless Rye IPA

Everyone loves a good IPA, and here's a great one.  Plenty of big hop character, with a sharp, spicy edge that only rye can contribute.

Barrier Belgian 1

A beautiful Belgian Pale Ale with a light clovey spice character, fruitiness, candy sugar, and German and American hops.  What more could you ask for? Oh, there's alcohol too.  That's important.

CASK: Barrier Cairn Smoked Scottish Ale

Scottish ales are known for their rich caramel burnt sugar quality, and smooth finish.   This interesting example has had a substantial dose of peat smoked malt added to impart a rich layer of earthy smokiness.

Dubbel Down

Belgian Dubbels are known for their sugary malt quality, and Barrier seems to have a knack for taking a style which can sometimes be cloying, and making it easy to drink. Quite a quaffable dubbel.

Barrier Rembrandt Porter

Nuts and coffee, chocolate and toffee.  Everything just shy of roasted flavors.  Certainly a rich, velvety beer. You just have to try it.

Barrier Lights Out Stout

Cocoa, espresso and dark chocolate.  Slight smokey charcoal with an overripe fruity licorice note.  Ultra smooth, creamy mouthfeel.  This beer is the darkest and heaviest of the offered Barrier beers, and the perfect way to end your night.
