Want to Get a Great Workout and Do Something Really Nice for Your Neighbors?
| We are looking for volunteers who can give a few hours to help cut and split firewood. This project is ongoing and will continue throughout the summer. If you or your business is interested in spending some time helping us with this project, contact Dan Noyes at 888-2190 to schedule. Also, on September 12, volunteers will meet to cut, split and deliver the wood to income eligible families in our county. To sign up for this work day, call Dawn at 888-3252. This project is done in partnership with RSVP and the Volunteer Center, Community Action, and the State of Vermont, and wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers. Coming in September: EMERGENCY PLANNING FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS: Each year, we try to identify people in the community who would need special assistance in an emergency. The information is entered into the 911 emergency database. In the event of a crisis, this information allows emergency responders to know exactly where to go and what will be needed when they get there. This is a pilot project done in partnership with E911 and the Lamoille County Sheriff's Department. Look for more information in September. |

How Vermont 2-1-1 Played a Critical Role in the 2011 Spring Floods
| |
After a winter of heavy, record-breaking snowfall combined with a Spring that brought rains which saturated the ground, melted the snow and caused massive flooding along the river basins and Lake Champlain, Vermont Emergency Management (VEM) called on its partner agency - Vermont 2-1-1 - to collect and identify just how much damage there was.
The public was asked to dial 2-1-1 to report all damages and losses due to the flooding. Utilizing Vermont 2-1-1 expanded the capacity of the State's Emergency Operations Center by offering the public an alternative access point to report damages. Trained Information and Referral Specialists identified unmet and emerging needs, helping direct resources such as VT VOAD and the American Red Cross to high priority situations. In partnership with Vermont Emergency Management and Vermont Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VT VOAD), Vermont 2-1-1 helped the state receive its designation for federal disaster assistance. Approximately 1,400 flood reports were taken from the public.
Vermont 2-1-1 will continue to play a role in the long-term recovery efforts by offering a sustained connection to help for people whose lives were dramatically affected by the flood. Since the announcement of the federal declaration, callers are now being given details on how to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to receive financial assistance for temporary housing, repairs and other eligible needs. Even though Vermont 2-1-1 staff has participated in drills and exercises using a bad weather scenario, this type of event was Vermont 2-1-1's first live response to a statewide disaster since its inception in 2005.

GIVE.
If you could help just one person in Lamoille County, whom would it be? That's the question we'll be asking the community during the coming campaign.
The answer isn't easy, is it? The need is great and there's only so much money to go around. When you support our local United Way, you won't need to make this decision because you'll be a part of helping thousands of our neighbors!
We follow community needs and use your gifts to fund 15 of the most critical programs in our community. Please take a minute to read our Annual Report which explains in more detail how United Way donations are used.
When you receive our letter in September, we ask that you open it and learn more about us. We're very proud of our work and think you will be impressed at how much we're able to accomplish for a small organization. | |
