Dear Friends of Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries,
Since its earliest days as a parish cemetery in the late 1800's, the Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries has always reached out to the Catholic Community during their time of need. This approach always attempted to insure that our Catholic community would have the opportunity to be buried in sacred Christian burial ground.
Over the years this commitment has led to the development of six cemetery locations in the diocese, the implementation of a Diocesan wide bereavement service program and in 2007, the Diocese first full service mortuary. Queen of Heaven Mortuary in Mesa was opened with the intent to preserve the traditions of our faith, while providing compassionate funeral services to the Catholic Community.
Based on the success of Queen of Heaven Mortuary, and at the request of families and religious leaders in the West Valley, Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries is in the process of developing its second full service funeral home at Holy Cross Cemetery, Avondale, AZ. The new mortuary is anticipated to open in early 2013.
Drawing of New Mortuary and Cemetery Facility
The 19,963 square foot facility will be located on the corner of 99th Avenue and Thomas Road in an undeveloped area of the cemetery. Like Queen of Heaven Mortuary, the facility will be anchored by a 3,920 square foot chapel for rosaries and visitations. In addition to serving the families funeral needs, the facility will also serve as the office for Holy Cross Cemetery. In addition to the mortuary facility, we will be improving internal and external roadways. The mortuary is expected to serve families throughout the West Valley.
"One of the corporal works of mercy is to bury the dead. We look forward to expanding our funeral ministry and offering Catholic families a state of the art facility that will represent the spiritual essence of our Catholic faith" stated Harry N. Antram, Director of Funeral Services.
If you would like more information on Queen of Heaven Mortuary or any of our other cemeteries in Phoenix, Avondale, Verde Valley or Flagstaff, please call 602-267-1329. If you would like information on pre planning your funeral, please contact Mr. Gray at the Catholic Heritage Plan at 602-267-1329.
A new 382 crypt out door mausoleum is being planned for the South East corner of Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery in North Phoenix. The new mausoleum will be named in honor of Blessed John Paul. Presales on the project have begun and construction will start on or before June of 2014, depending on sales.
 Christ's Peace,
Gary L. Brown

BUY BACK POLICY
Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries has elected to exercise it's right to not buy back burial rights. Those owning burial rights are allowed to sell to other Catholics who have met with the cemetery staff and agree to comply with the Rules and Regulations of Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries and observe Catholic practices with regard to funerals. Because we are Catholic cemeteries, families are reminded that the president's approval is required before a transfer takes place. As our cemetery needs change, our buy back policy may continue to evolve. |

BRONZE VASE THEFTS
Thefts of bronze vases at our cemeteries have been on the increase throughout the past year. They are apparently targeted for their scrap metal value. Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries has taken a number of steps to address the issue. We are in contact with the Scrap Metal Detail of the Phoenix Police Department. We file a police report whenever a vase is reported stolen. We are also carefully watching legislation now under consideration at the Arizona Legislature that would increase the penalties for those who steal these items. We have security patrols at night. Our employees watch for suspicious activity during the day.
The Rules and Regulations of the cemetery state:
"The Cemetery and/or Mortuarywill take all reasonable precautions to protect the Burial Rights of the Owners within the cemetery and/or mortuary, from loss or damage, however, it specifically disclaims any responsibility for loss or damage due to causes beyond its reasonable control, including but not limited thereto, damage caused by elements, acts of God, common enemy, thieves, vandals, malicious mischief, explosions, unavoidable accidents, invasion, insurrections, riots, or order of any military or civil authority, when the damage be directed or collateral, other than as herein provided." R&R p.10 ¶ G
Given the current price of bronze and the likelihood of that price increasing, we've located a polymer and a zinc replacement vase (depending on location). We recognize the hardship it is for many of our families to replace vases, therefore Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries will replace a stolen bronze vase with the polymer or zinc vase, one time free of charge. Cost for vases after the first one is $100.00 |

DAY OF RECOLLECTION
On February 4th over 100 people attended a Day of Recollection held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church sponsored by Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries. Healing Through Grief and Forgiveness was led by
Dennis Linn, M.Div., Sheila Fabricant-Linn M.Div., and Matt Linn, S. J. The Linns work together as a team, integrating physical, emotional and spiritual wholeness, previously as hospital chaplains and therapists and currently in leading retreats and spiritual companioning.
They have taught courses on processes for healing in over fifty countries and in many universities and hospitals, including a course to doctors accredited by the American Medical Association. They are committed to Jesus' "Third Way" of finding non-violent solutions to personal and social problems.
Thank you to St. Theresa's for hosting the event. |
