ABOUT ALL SOULS DAY

All Souls Day (November 2) follows All Saints Day (November 1) with a slight shift of focus. On All Saints Day, we pray for and celebrate Mass in honor of those who have attained heaven. We shift our focus on All Souls Day and pray for those who are in need of further purification.

While some of us may die in perfect peace and communion with Christ, it is likely that most of us will require additional purification before we are fully open to the fullness of love and holiness of God and enter into heavevn.

Purgatory is the name that the Church gives to this final purification of the elect and is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.  All who die in God's grace and friendship, but are still imperfectly purified, are assured of eternal salvation, but must still undergo this state of purification.

We pray for the faithful departed throughout the year. But, All Souls Day has been set aside to pray especially for the souls in Purgatory who are undergoing this purification. Not only do we remember the dead, but we assist the release of souls from Purgatory through prayer, celebration of Mass and good deeds.

Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation, one of the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy. While realizing that the purification of the souls in purgatory will someday be complete, we are asked to assist them as we follow the example that is found in the 2nd Book of Maccabees 12:42-46.

We invite you to join us on All Souls Day as we celebrate Mass at each of our cemeteries.  Let us remember those we have loved who have gone before us. Let us also pray for those who have no one to pray for them.

CATHOLIC CEMETERY SUNDAY

November 6, 2011 has been designated Catholic Cemetery Sunday. While the entire month of November is dedicated to prayer and remembrance of the faithful departed, on Catholic Cemetery Sunday, we are encouraged to visit the graves of our loved ones and friends in a show of respect to those who have gone before us.

We are again reminded of the importance of prayer for our loved ones who are buried in these sacred grounds.

Our Catholic Cemeteries have created prayerful, sacred spaces.  The cemeteries are visible reminders of our belief in the resurrection and in the communion of Saints.  They proclain a truth that overshadows the sadness of our losses in witnessing to the fact that Jesus is risen from the dead, thus providing us with a source of hope.

On Catholic Cemetery Sunday, we remember the special calling of Catholic Cemeteries to carry out the sacred mission of burying the dead. The Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries mission statement reads:

The mission of the Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries

is to continue the Church's sacred mission to bury and care for the dead,

witnessing to the dignity of human life and the hope of resurrection

by acting as responsible stewards in providing quality services, resources,

comfort and assistance to families in a sacred and spiritual environment.

We invite you to come and prayer for those who are buried in our Catholic Cemeteries, to reflect on the shortness of life and fullness of eternity, to reflect on the promise of Christ's return.

"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

GRIEF CORNER

Family Grief

by Sr. Teresa McIntier, CSJ, M.S., F.T.

Family life is changed when a member's death reduces their number.  The loss has the potential to tear relationships apart because each member is uniquely tied to the one who died.  The positive side of loss is the innate capacity of each member to meet the special challenge they face as they channel their pain into a meaningful way of life.  It won't be easy and the demands will be great, but the outcome is priceless.

Adults are able to grieve abstractly because of their multiple experiences and their developed coping mechanisms.  Children, on the other hand, are more vulnerable beacause of their underdeveloped skills in abstract reasoning.  This increases their vulnerability and conflicts with each phase of their maturation.  The younger a child is, the more restricted are their coping skills.  Their bereeavement involves an interplay between their developmental tasks and their struggle with each phase of their childhood.

The next Grief Corner will address the impact of Holidays and Grief in the next issue.
