What is "Business Casual'?

So you obtained a new job where the dress code is "business casual." What does that mean? Before you show up to work dressed inappropriately here are a few tips:

Shoes: If you can wear a pair of shoes in the shower, you should leave them at home.

  • For women, dressy sandals are now often acceptable in work places but check with your employer first. Some employers require closed toe shoes due to health or safety issues. If you do show off you toes, make sure they are clean and well manicured.
  • For men, a shoeshine and a smile go a long way to make a good impression. Worn heels and scuffed toes spell sloppy.

Pants: Spandex, cutoffs, cargo pants and workout attire are no go.

  • Khaki or dress pants are always good choices. Many companies have moved to jean Fridays, some allow jeans every day and some never allow jeans. If they are allowed, make sure they are clean and neat. Torn, dirty and very low rise jeans are not appropriate for the work place.

Shirts/tops: Unless you are working in the Mohave Desert, saveyour coworkers the embarrassment of seeing you in strapless, halter top or spaghetti strap tops.

  • For both men and women, t-shirts with graphic designs are often seen as too casual.  If you are able to wear a t-shirt to work, stick to plain loose fitting shirts. Blouses, tunics, polo shirts and button down shirts are all great business casual choices.
