Three Tips for a

Job Seeker's Business Card

Networking is a very important activity when conducting a job search, but you wouldn't walk into a networking event with a stack of resumes.  You need to have a way to let contacts know how to get in touch with you.  Business cards are the "commodity" exchanged at networking events, and the perfect way to give someone your contact information.  The challenge for job seekers is what to put on their business card.

There are three essentials items:

1)    Who you are: Be sure to add important degrees or certifications after your name if they apply to the job you are seeking.

2)    What you do: Describe what you are looking for and give yourself a title.  For instance, Human Resources Professional, Statistical Analyst, Full Charge Bookkeeper, Cashier, Health Insurance Processing Supervisor, Computer Training Specialist.  Be clear about what you do.

3)    How to contact you: One phone number and one email address.  Use the phone number you are most likely to answer.  Don't list the phone number that the kids will pick up, or that always goes to voice mail.  Listing more than one phone number is asking the caller to work too hard...it's like saying, "Try this number and if you don't get through, try this other number."  Use a professional-sounding voicemail message and professional-looking email address, such as your name.  Save the cute taglines for your personal life.

Optional items you might want to include are a list of competencies or specific training, your job objective, and the URL or QR code to your LinkedIn profile or website.

Other things to remember:

  • As with any marketing piece, be sure the design is appropriate and attractive.  Make sure it is easy to read.  A matte white back is helpful for jotting notes.
  • Always carry your business cards with you.  Keep them handy, so you don't have to go digging for them when asked.
  • Be sure to check your voicemail and email regularly!

You should be able to purchase 250 cards for under $20.  Check websites and the local office supply stores.  Or you can print them yourself for much less.  A box of business card paper is less than $10 at the warehouse clubs, and will provide 1,000 cards.
