E-Z Checklist

for Job Seekers

Follow these first 3 steps to develop your own career path:

  1. Get Ready!-- Acceptance

Accepting your situation and coming to terms with what needs to be accomplished so that you can obtain a new job is the first step to beginning your new career.  You need to take responsibility for your attitude and your job search.

  1. Find Your Strengths-- Assessment

You have skills, experience and knowledge! Take stock of all your career assets, your values and passions, not just your past job titles.

  1. Identify opportunities-- More Assessments

Get going with your research.  What are the new hot jobs?  Network with people in those fields.  Be open to new ideas.

You're on a roll, so keep going!

  1. Upgrade your skills-- Learn

This can be different for each person, from improving your typing skills, to earning a certificate, to learning a  new software, to   finishing a bachelor's degree, to earning a degree in a high demand occupation.  Consider taking a part time job while you invest in   your education.

  1. Develop your marketing tools-- Start Selling

Create a marketing campaign that will sell your skills to employers and differentiate you from other candidates.  Your tool kit should include a resume, cover letter, follow up letter, business card, an on-line profile and interview answers that you have practiced.

  1. Design your game plan-- Write it Up

Design a comprehensive job search plan.  Put   your game plan down on paper, or  on  the computer so you can adjust it as new opportunities present themselves. Discuss your plan with others to help you create a winning strategy.

Don't stop!

  1. Commit to yourself-- Be Bold

Be proactive!  Start thinking about your job search as your "new job."  Get out of the house!  Understand that you are not alone.  Don't just get through the day, get from the day!

  1. Reality check-- Stay Focused

If you still haven't found the right job, it may be time to re-evaluate.  Go back through steps 1 through 7.  Is there something you missed?  Unemployment is not what you are, it is a situation you are going through.  Keep trying and your hard work will pay off.

  1. Begin your new job with a healthy attitude! Remember where you came from and be grateful

You've done it!  Begin this new chapter of your life with an open mind.  Celebrate your successful job search!
