Interviews:
Anticipation or Dread?
Interviews
are a bit of a double-edged sword; we hope to get one but can't wait for it to be over. Interviews are really very
basic; every candidate is essentially evaluated on four simple questions:
- Do you understand the job for
which you are applying?
- Can you do the job?
- Do you fit with the
company culture?
- Will you be a positive
addition to the company?
Some Do's and Don'ts to keep in
mind before your next interview:
Do's:
Check your attitude. Are you sending a positive message to
the interviewer? Confidence is
quite different than arrogance. Show flexibility and enthusiasm in addition to their expertise.
Define your value to the
employer. This is how you get
control of the interview. Strong
candidates show how they can make the employer more successful.
Do your homework. Understand the job and culture of the
company. Prepare several questions
to ask for clarification and understanding; bring them with you along with
a notepad and pen.
For group interviews connect
with the group as well as individual interviewers. Be cognizant of group dynamics and how
you fit. Respond directly to the panelist asking the question, but make
eye contact with the group as well.
Don'ts:
Overlook your voicemail greeting
or email address. Make sure it is professional.
Disrespect the interviewer by
not being professionally dressed or by bringing coffee/water into the
interview, or answering your cell phone.
Leave your phone in the car or turn it off.
Look at your watch. This implies you are bored or have other
plans that are more important.
Be casual during a phone
interview. Take it as seriously as
you would an in-person interview.
Are you in a shopping center, your car, or at work? Remove yourself
from loud background noises and distractions pr ask to return the call.
Remember
that both parties have power during an interview. Putting your best foot forward is always good
advice. But if the job isn't a good fit,
it really can't be forced.
