Accessing the Hidden Job Market

A lot has been written about the hidden job market, those jobs that are not advertised on job boards and websites.  Experts state that over 80% of available openings fall into this category.  This means that less than 20% of openings are advertised!

If you are spending all your job search time sitting at your computer surfing the job boards, then you are spending 100% of your time looking at only 20% of what is available.  Does that seem productive to you?

Devote more time to finding those unadvertised positions.  Where there is less competition, because there are fewer applicants, your chances of getting called for an interview increase.

Find these openings by taking every opportunity to connect and meet with people who are doing what you want to do, work at companies that hire people that do what you want to do, or know people who do what you want to do.  Find out about their career path, ask about new trends in the industry, and ask them who they can introduce you to.

And remember, you have to give to get!  Make connections for others whenever you can.  It's all about working together and helping each other.
