I've worked with Nick Tesi for many years contracting 3D scans from him for several of the shows we work on and have always been secure in the knowledge that he would deliver quality work on time.  We recently called on Nick Tesi's new company TNG Visual Effects (The Nicholas Group) and he has once again proven himself with excellent service,
speed and is providing even higher quality models than expected for our projects. Nick is dependable and will go the extra mile to make sure that we get what we need. I would recommend him and his company to any project needing 3D scanning."

Greetings!
How fast is your 3D Scanning Service?

Speed? Is this important? Based on my experience it is. When a 3D scanning service is brought in or hired it is a means to an end. You need to get through this part to get to the model to put it in that spot, film or game.
No one ever said to me "take your time, we have all day". Rather it is "how long will it take, can you do it a little quicker". We have a small window of time to be ready. Does the term hurry up and wait sound familiar? You wait for the talent and then it goes quick when they arrive. Typically every one is in a hurry to get the talent back on set or off the clock, but also want good data.
We now have a solution that is fast in set up, fast to scan with fast to pack up. This is not last years scanner. It is small but accurate, cute but serious, and fast to finish. It is also small enough to put in our hand held baggage, which means we do not check it, we keep it with us. This saves time and money.

Quality should never  be compromised at the expense of speed. Often it is a question of which do you want and the answer should always be both.
As production times shorten, and budgets shrink we need to be smarter as we approach these projects.

Pre-Vis or Lidar or Both?:
Lidar Scanning has become one of the most popular 3D scanning services on the market. You can use it for Pre-Vis and then go back to the original data and use it for backgrounds, sets, large objects such as ships, tanks, commercial airplanes etc.

The scanner not only mounts on a tripod but for the Pre-Vis you could also have it mounted on a car or truck and drive through a city or in the country and collect a lot of data fast.  However, if that is not fast enough you can hook it to a helicopter and scan large areas quickly of a city or country scene.

This has been by far the most used technology in recent years and advancing technology. The newest unit can now scan a 10 times higher point cloud of its predecessors. This of course will call for an extremely well equipped computer to handle data of this size.

Where can it go? Nearly anywhere on our planet. It may be hard to find a place to plug into, but a portable generator will be able to power the scanner in those remote areas.

Whether you are scanning a model in a studio, a celebrity for a commercial at a Baseball stadium or extra on set at production site. Planning is paramount to get the best results in the shortest period of time. If you find that planning was not possible as a situation popped up, you will want to take a look at your options to find who can work with you at the last minute without breaking your budget.

In Conclusion
We at TNG Visual Effects are looking for better ways to serve the entertainment industry through better service and prices.
