Generations United Welcomes New Board Members

At its meeting on Jan. 26, the Generations United Board of Directors welcomed three new members: Mary Ann Casey, Sharon Fine, and Walter L. Jones, Jr. Congratulations and a warm welcome!      

 

Mary Ann Casey has been involved in non-profit activities for over 25 years and currently serves on the board of her family's Patton Family Foundation, which has a focus on intergenerational programs. She also serves on the Board of Trustees at the Norton Museum of Art at Palm Beach, Fla. and is a member of the Vestry of Christ Memorial Chapel in Hobe Sound, Fla.

 

Sharon Fine is a senior vice president of Affinity Insurance Services, a division of Aon, a global provider of risk management, insurance brokerage and human resource consulting. Sharon is responsible for managing over 15 association-sponsored property and casualty programs focused on the not-for-profit community.  

 

Walter Jones is vice president - West Area Network for Verizon Wireless. He is responsible for planning, engineering, systems performance and day-to-day operations of Verizon's wireless network across the west coast of the U.S. Jones' career in telecommunications spans 21 years. He joined Bell Atlantic, Virginia in 1989 and has held a series of leadership roles.

Board Member Pamela Smith is working with her son, San Francisco 49ers' quarterback Alex Smith, to interest the NFL in getting involved in Grandparents' Day.

Show Your Creativity in EPA's "Sense of Wonder" Contest

The Environmental Protection Agency invites submissions to the 6th annual Rachel Carson intergenerational "Sense of Wonder" contest. Four categories: photography, essay, poetry and dance. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, this year's contest will focus on a "Sense of Water." Contest partners include: Generations United, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, National Center for Creative Aging, and Rachel Carson Council Inc. Read the contest blog.   

Funding Opportunities 
The First Nations Development Institute's Native Youth and Culture Fund is requesting Letters of Intent (LOIs) for projects that focus on youth, and incorporate culture and tradition to address social issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, mental health or other social issues. "Opportunity Road: The Promise and Challenge of America's Forgotten Youth," discusses the 73 percent of 16- to 24-year-olds who are not enrolled in school, are not employed and do not have a college degree, and explains the benefits to the nation of re-engaging these young people and how to get them back on track. The University of Minnesota Extension offers "Youth Development's 100 Year Legacy: Lessons to shape future research and practice." It will cover the impact of divergent perspectives on youth development, the value of translational scholarship, and the importance of leveraging systems support.
