Spring Issue
April 2010
Greetings!
My work in the nonprofit sector gives me the opportunity to meet amazing professionals in the field who regularly share their wisdom and resources. From time to time I will share with you a few of these resources that I find invaluable and keep me thinking outside the box. If you don't have time now to look into some of the items listed in the this newsletter, just check the Resources page on my website - they will be posted there also.

If you live or work in my home state of New Jersey, make sure to check out the link on the right for the Governor's home page. Hint: read the entire budget brief, not just the sections about departments you are used to dealing with day to day. The impact on nonprofits and the communities they serve is enormous and complex. Are you ready if there is a state government shutdown in July?

Sincerely,

Regina Podhorin

On Nonprofits Q&A by Dr. Terrie Temkin

Terrie is a trusted colleague of mine from the great state of Florida, though her consulting practice is global.  Every month she addresses a different question relevant to the nonprofit sector and her responses are concise, clear and very accessible.  I learn something new every time I receive this great resource. Take look at On Nonprofits Q&A or sign up at the Core Strategies for Nonprofits website to receive further issues.
Nonprofit Board Crisis Blog
Blog icon standardMike Burns is edgy and smart and blogs every day about critical issues in the field. His mission is to "change the world one nonprofit at a time". While you might not have time to read his blog every day, it is well worth your while to check it out from time to time. I am constantly amazed at the time and care he puts into this blog.
Program Evaluation
Some recent Federal initiatives seek to focus funds on interventions that have been found effective in randomized experiments. Most nonprofits cannot meet the historical research standards of including random control trials (RCT) and the General Accounting Office (GAO) is finally opening the door by recognizing that RTCs are not always appropriate or required. Find out more about how A Variety of Rigorous Methods Can Help Identify Effective Interventions.
