Grooming Scholarship
- This award is open to any applicant wishing to pursue a career in professional pet grooming.
- Applicants must be at least sixteen years of age, have a genuine concern and affection for animals, and possess a high school Diploma or GED.
- Applicants must understand that pet grooming is a physically demanding career. They must have no handicaps, physical or otherwise, that could prevent use of knowledge or skills gained from the training or successful job performance after completion of the training or in any way jeopardize the health, safety and welfare of the pets in their charge.
- One non renewable scholarship will be awarded each year.
- The winner must plan to attend one of the pre-approved pet grooming schools participating in the GroomTeam USA, Inc. ® Scholarship Program
- GroomTeam USA, Inc. ® will subsidize the cost of the recipients grooming equipment package up to a maximum of $1,000.00.
- In evaluating the applicants, an independent selection committee will consider the applicants' financial need, community involvement, volunteer and/or business experience, essay, and letters of reference. Five finalists will be selected and their information will be presented to the GroomTeam USA, Inc. ®Board of Directors. The identities of the finalists shall be hidden and the Board of Directors shall select the final winner.

The Michigan Retailers Association Scholarship Fund
MRA's 2012 competition for $34,000 in scholarships is underway.
Applications are accepted until April 2, 2012.

Michigan Retailers Foundation, established in 1968, provides college scholarships annually to benefit retailers and their employees and families. The foundation is a nonprofit educational organization established by MRA. Donations are tax deductible.
MRA's college scholarship competition begins in January each year. Applications are due by April 1. To be eligible, the student applicant or a parent or guardian must work at a business that is a member of MRA. High school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors may apply.
Awards are $1,000 for public or private college students and $500 for community college students. Financial need is not a consideration.

| "Puppy Love" Cherry Crunchies

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup dry milk powder
- 1/2 cup dried cherries, chopped
- 1 egg, beaten
Directions: -
Preheat the oven to 350°. In a large bowl, stir together all of the ingredients and cup water, adding more water as needed if the dough is too stiff.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the dough 1/4 inch thick. Using a 1-inch cookie cutter, cut out the dough and transfer to a greased cookie sheet. Gather and combine all the scraps, roll and form more cookies; repeat until all of the dough is used. Bake until crisp, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool.

"My Dog's Coat Is Matted?"
 A mat is a tangled mass of hair, held together by interwoven fibers, dirt, and debris. There many types of mats, some easier to remove than others. Whether your pet is just a little tangled or heavily matted, working with your pet groomer is the best way to understand and eliminate mats.Dogs like people, have a dominant side, so mats may appear more on one side than another. Problem areas include the armpits, legs, rear, behind the ears, and the collar area. These areas are where the most friction takes place on your pet, and daily activities like romps in the snow can be enough to cause a tangled coat. Once even a slightly damp area is allowed to dry without proper brushing and combing, the hair acts much like a wool sweater washed in warm water then dried in the dryer. The fibers shrink and become tight. Combing out this kind of a mat is extremely hard on the pet and can be painful.
Our Instructors will do everything possible to use our products and tools to remove mats and tangles from a pets' coat. However, if the process is stressful or uncomfortable to a pet, we will recommend going shorter rather than putting a dog through the painful process of dematting.
We can teach you how to keep your pet tangle free between grooms. We even have wonderful brushes and combs that will make the job easier. Let us help you prevent matting - and help you save on dematting charges.

Caution! Some Ingredients in Chewing Gum Can Be Harmful to Your Pet!
Take a look at your gum labels. Xylitol, a widely used sugar substitute has been found to be harmful to pets.
What are the signs of xylitol toxicity?
Vomiting is usually the first sign of toxicity and then in 30-60 minutes hypoglycemia can occur. The signs of hypoglycemia can be lethargy, ataxia (stumbling around), collapse, and seizure. In cases where gum with xylitol was ingested the hypoglycemia may be delayed for up to 12 hours. In severe over doses some dogs do not display the signs of hypoglycemia prior to the onset of liver failure. Instead lethargy and vomiting occurred 9-72 hours after exposure. They developed petechia (small spots of bleeding on the skin and mucus membranes like gums), echymosis (larger spots of bleeding seen on the skin and mucus membranes), and gastric hemorrhage (bleeding in the stomach).
What can you do if your dog does ingest xylitol?
Immediately bring him into your veterinarian and let her know which items contained xylitol. Remember how much you pet consumed (always estimate on the high side because it is always better to be overly cautious when it comes to the health and wellbeing of your faithful friend). Your veterinarian will want to treat your dog with dextrose (a type of sugar) so that they do not go into hypoglycemic shock. They will also treat the pet for liver disease if enough xylitol is ingested.
