The holidays are almost here! We want to make sure your pets look their best for family, friends, and guests. Our appointment books fill up fast for the weeks just before Thanksgiving and Christmas, so please call ahead to make sure you get your preferred dates!

At Paragon, we groom pets of all ages. When it comes to grooming, each pet has its own needs and preferences. Some dogs and cats love "spa day" and have a great time getting clean and tangle free. It can be a great experience for your pet - lots of fun, lots of affection, and plenty of one on one attention.
Pets are a lot like us when it comes to aging. They may tire easily or find some things become painful that never bothered them before. As groomers, we try to find out as much as possible about our pet clients so we can be sensitive and responsive to their needs. If your pet is getting on in years, please let us know if he or she needs special care. We can also let you know what recommendations we have for your pet as s/he gets older and grooming needs change.
At some point, the grooming process may be too overwhelming for your pet's comfort. If that's the case, we'll let you know as carefully and gently as possible about what grooming options are best for you and your beloved pet.
What Should You Know About Grooming Older Pets?
- Some pets may become incontinent as they age. More frequent bathing may be needed to help keep them clean and free from skin irritation.
- Pets become sensitive to changes in temperature. For us, that also means water temperature. We'll be extra careful to make adjustments for your pet's comfort.
- You may notice that your pet's coat feels oily or waxy. Cats may be unable to groom themselves as carefully as they used to. Our gentle shampoos and thorough brushing will help keep their coats looking beautiful.
- Older pets need dental care, too. Let us brush your pet's teeth for continued proper dental health.
- As they age, pets may have declining hearing and sight abilities. This may be stressful for them, as they can no longer detect objects around them as well as they used to. Be careful when approaching steps and crossing the street, and try to get their attention when in their vicinity so they aren't startled by "suddenly" becoming aware of you.

Homemade Jerky treats for Your Pet - No Dehydrator Needed!
 Cut boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into strips and mixed it with a small amount of Lawry's. Here's how to use your oven:
Put top oven rack all the way to top
Line lower rack with aluminum foil
Push toothpick through the very end of chicken strip and hang chicken through top rack, anchoring with toothpick (Space chicken an inch or so apart for proper air circulation)
Shut oven door placing wooden spoon in the door so that it is cracked open
Set oven at 150
It will take several hours, at least 8, maybe more depending on how "done" you want it and how big the pieces are .
When done remove from oven and discard toothpicks. Let cool before placing in plastic bag or container. I keep mine refrigerated to be safe.

Pet of the Month
Meet Stella Fredericks, a Staffordshire Terrier. She's a sweet little dog with an adorable face! She used to be very timid when she came for her grooming appointments, but has really bloomed! She now greets the students and staff with her award winning grin and gentle affection. She's our star who won last year's Howloween costume contest.

Spotlight on Hilaire Boelkins, CMG
Paragon is proud to have Hilaire as our Lead Instructor. Hil is a strong leader, a Certified Master Groomer, and a reliable member of our team. Hilaire's love of animals and desire to work professionally with them brought her to Paragon for training. She specializes in working with geriatric and temperamental dogs but also has a special gift for working with cats. She is a favorite among the students because of her positive attitude, patience, and natural aptitude for teaching.
Hilaire lives with her Jack Russell (Luna), her Cairn Terrier (Scooter), and three cats, Webster, River and Ra. In her spare time, she enjoys anything animal related, hiking, and any other outdoor activity, especially during Michigan summers.

Paragon Lends a Hand
Last Friday, the Paragon students got a real treat! One of our Instructors, Jen Lotterman, is a volunteer with Kelley's Heart-2-Heart Adoption Center. She arranged for six of the cutest puppies to be brought to our school for grooming. Our students were so excited to be able to help these little sweethearts get ready for their big adoption day on the following Saturday. All of the puppies did well on their first "spa day" and several were adopted the next day. It's an incredibly rewarding experience to be able to help out in situations like these and help our pet friends find good homes.
