Keep Halloween Safe for Your Pet
We love this time of year. Candy, costumes, and lots of fun parties make for an exciting time of year. Help your pet enjoy this festive season with these simple tips:
- Stress: Strangers in costume can be a little scary to your pet friends. Your friendly pet may become fearful and potentially aggressive if he is startled by people in disguise. If he gets nervous from the repeated door bell rings, try keeping him in a quiet room until your trick or treating guests call it a night.
- Candles and Jack-o-Lanterns: Wagging tails and frightened cats zooming through the house can easily knock over exposed candles and decorations.
- General Safety: Keep your pets inside for the night - especially black cats!
- Candy: We all know chocolate is bad for your pet, but some sweeteners can also pose health risks. Beware of lollipops or other candies with plastic parts that can be a choking hazard.
- Costumes: Be sure to keep your pets in view at all times while they are dressed up. It's easy to get tangled up in costumes. Some may even be considered worthy of chewing on, so it's best to make sure your pet doesn't ingest her outfit.
Here is a great recipe so your dog doesn't miss out on all the fun!
TRICKY TREATS FOR DOGS Makes 14 treats
2 cups water 3/4 cup canned applesauce 1/8 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 3 cups whole-wheat flour 1 cup white flour 1/4 cup chopped nuts 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup oats
Preheat oven to 350 F.
In a bowl, mix water, applesauce, vanilla, and egg thoroughly.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, nuts, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon, stirring well.
Add wet ingredients to dry and mix well.
Spoon into greased muffin tins, filling each cup completely and bake for about 1 1/4 hours. Cool completely and store in a sealed container.
