Howl-oween Health
It's that time of year! Ghoulies and ghosties will soon be tapping on your doors, begging for special treats. Remember that not all yummies safe for children will also be good for your pets, and that while you may enjoy the parade of costumes, your pet may have other ideas. Here are some things to consider this Howloween. Chocolate, especially dark and baker's
chocolate, causes shaking, seizures,
increased heart rate and death. Cats and birds are even more
sensitive to its effects, but may not be as tempted to try it.
Raisins and grapes may have a negative affect on your dog, as well. While this may not be true for every canine, it may be best to prevent Fido from indulging in these sweets.
Make sure your pet stays away from foil wraps. While shiny and fun, they can also cause intestinal blockages, if ingested.
They're cute, but those costumed little visitors can also be overwhelming to your pet. To prevent stress and to reduce the risk of flight - not to mention the possibility of an accidental bite - keep your dog secured in a place that is quiet and calm. You can make it up to him with an extra tummy rub after the candy is gone.
...and costumes. Yes, Fluffy is adorable in his Darth Vadar outfit, but don't let him wear it unsupervised. If he tries to remove it by chewing on it or rubbing through it, he could become injured.
Most importantly, do not let your pet roam freely - especially on Halloween. With increased traffic, and other risks posed to your pets, it's best to keep them safely indoors
