Soldier Reunion Dog Crying

We've all seen some of these,
but somehow they don't get
old. It doesn't have anything to do with carpentry or gardens, but this soldier-dog reunion is a heartwarming tear jerker. Enjoy, then go hug your dog!

GREEN GOODIE

Oh that Bougainvillea! It's beautiful, but it can be a real hand full!

Well, August is a good month to get a handle on it by pruning. So get out there and cut it back now, but please wear eye protection and watch out for thorns.

Do not, however, prune gardenias or azeleas this month as you may be cutting off flower bud that would bloom in the Spring.  Good Luck!

Carpenter's Corner
Something we see a lot is water rot at the bottom of wooden fences. The problem is that most people want their fence to be in contact with the ground for either aesthetic reasons or to prevent their dog from trying to dig their way out under the fence.

When it rains, as it often does in Florida, mud can splash up against the fence and retain moisture there. Vegetation at the base of a fence can also keep things damp. Both conditions will lead to premature rot at the bottom of an otherwise perfectly good fence.

Whether we are building a new fence or repairing an old fence we recommend that our clients let us lay a boarder of landscape fabric lined with mulch or pebble as a boarder  along the fence line. This creates a beautiful contrast frame for the fence at ground level and keeps things clean and dry. The result is a fence that stays beautiful and lasts longer.

Do it yourself or give us a call.
Your fence and your wallet will thank you!

Project of the Month
Contemporary Purlin Pergola

Our client in Carrollwood had a really old pergola. It had a nice design, but time and the elements had done terrible things to it. It was rotted and crusty. It also had some issues with the original placement and size of the posts. It needed to be replaced with something better.

We knew we could help. We disassembled and removed the old pergola for a fresh start. The original posts were unevenly placed 4x4s, so we replaced them with thicker symmetrically placed posts. Then we rebuilt the canopy using clean, simple lines to mimic the Arts & Crafts Movement style of the original pergola.

The result was a tasteful, contemporary pergola with just the right combination of shade, air, and light. Our client loved it and will enjoy it for many years to come!

At Gardencarpentry.com we build a lot of beautiful new structures, but sometimes old things need a little TLC too. Here, Tim and Danny take some time to repair and old wood and steel access bridge that lost a battle with a falling tree.

Plant of the Month
Jatropha
(Jatropha Integerrima:Peregrina)

As we move through the dog days of August in Florida the idea of hearty, adaptable plants becomes more and more attractive. Jatropha is just that. It is a symmetrical, tropical evergreen with beautiful red flower clusters which bloom year round.

Jatropha can be grown as a shrub, a tree, or even in containers on a patio or deck. It is happy in a variety of light environments, is physically hardy, and is resistant to most pests and diseases. Other then needing well drained soil it is also adaptable to different types of soils and is fairly drought resistant.

Beautiful, tough, adaptable. All in all, a plant for all seasons, literally!
