GREEN GOODIE

Spring is right on our doorstep so here are some things to keep in mind for the next few weeks or so...

1. Cold spells can still happen. Stay prepared!

2. It's going to be dry, so keep watering, especially new plantings.

3. Get perrenials in the ground and start replacing cool weather annuals with summer varieties.

4. Get summer bulbs and warm season crops in the ground before temperatures heat up.

5. Finish up winter prunning on shrubs.

MULCH! MULCH!

MULCH!

March is notoriously dry in Florida. So here are a few things to remember about mulching...

1. It preserves soil moisture by protecting from Sun and wind.

2. It provides constant organic nutrients.

3. It provides some protection against pests.

4. It improves soil texture.

5. It looks great.

If you buy fertalizer you may have seen these letters.
N-P-K.
Here is what they mean...

N- Nitrogen. This is what plants need for healthy leaf and stem growth.

P- Phosphorous. This promotes root development, resistance to disease and encourages flower and fruit production.

K- Potash (potassium muriate) helps strengthen roots, defend against disease, and promotes drought resistance.

Covered Pergola with Potting Bench

Our client, like many homeowners in South Tampa, had a small back yard. He had already had a circular path of pavers installed and knew that he wanted to turn his back yard into a garden sanctuary, but he didn't have a plan to move forward.

We suggested a small pergola centered within his circular path to act as a focal point in the yard. To make it practical we put tinted lexan sheeting on the pergola and built a potting bench underneath.

Now our happy new client has a beautiful centerpiece for his garden where he can also work protected from the sun and rain. Another great way to stay green!

 PLANT OF THE MONTH

azalea
Click for more information.
 Azalea
Rhododendron Pentanthera (deciduous)
Rhododendron Tsutsuji (evergreen)

Azaleas are an example of something beautiful which shines brightly for a short time and then fades away. Fortunately, February to April is the time when North and Central Floridians can enjoy azalea's vibrant blooms.

Azaleas can do quite well in Central Florida. Depending on the variety they can be either transplanted or propagated from cuttings. If you want to incorporate Azaleas into your landscape here are a few important things to keep in mind...

1. They prefer filtered sunlight and good drainage so select your planting location accordingly.

2. Rapid thawing after a cold night can severely damage them. Place where they will not get direct early morning sun.

3. If you have sandy soil you will need to provide some form of fertalization for optimal growth.

4. Proper pruning is important if you want to get the fullest most vibrant blooms.

Please follow this link for more details and information on how to make Azaleas a beautiful part of your garden!

ASKED

QUESTIONS

What is the difference between an ESTIMATE and a CONSULTATION?

When getting involved in a home improvement project it is helpful to understand the difference between these two terms, as they describe two different things.

Estimates- In general, an estimate is simply a proposal to complete a specific task or job for a stated price. If you already know the details of the work you need done ("I need a new power outlet installed" or "I have a design for a shed that I bought on-line that I need built.") and just want to know how much it will cost, then you need an estimate. Many companies offer free estimates for such tasks because they can determine the price with a short series of questions over the phone or with a quick visit to your home. An estimate normally will include nothing more than a brief description of the work proposed along with a price.

Consultations- A consultation is usually necessary in situations when you have only a general idea of what you want done and need the advice and expertise of a professional to help you make educated decisions on how to proceed with the project. A consultation may include helping you to select styles, types of materials, and/or techniques. You may also expect information pertaining to applicable codes or permitting questions. Consultations are sometimes free, but can cost a nominal fee due to their time intensive nature. If your project is unique (custom) in any way or if you want details and drawings to keep, a consultation can be well worth your time and money.

Do you do free estimates?

Of course we do! We offer both consultations and estimates. When you know what you want to build give us a call. Simply provide us with the appropriate details of your project, such as dimensions, what material you want to use, drawings, pictures, or any applicable photos showing the style you desire and we will be happy to provide you with a free written estimate! If you need more intensive professional help in the planning of your project ask about our consultations. Either way, we are here to help!
