GREEN GOODIE
February is prunning time for ornamental grasses before they get started on spring growth. You don't need to prune every year but if there is a lot brown among the plants it's time to prune out the tops to allow new growth. When you are finished, provide a spring feeding and renew the mulch layer.

Warm season planting of vegatable and herb gardens is around the corner. Now is a good time to start freeing your planned planting area of weeds. Dig out deep rooted weeds by hand.
You can then cover the soil with a landscape fabric for a few weeks to finish off anything you missed. |
GREEN
GOODIE!
As you begin planning your layout for your warmer weather perennial plantings plant clusters of plants, not one of this and one of that. Also, try to leave a little room between clusters so you can move easily between them later for maintenance. |

Makes Breaktime More Enjoyable

Breaktime Pavilion We were contacted by Academic Alliance for Dermatology's Webb Road location in Tampa. They had a busy office with a lot of employees, but they didn't have a suitable outdoor break area. If their employees wanted to get out of the office for lunch or at break time the only place for them to go was into the parking lot or the sidewalk along the side of the building. But there was an opportunity for a solution which would make thier employee break time more inviting and relaxing. We were able to utilize the small green space adjacent to the building to build an octagonal shaped covered pavillion with benches and a table contained within. Now Academic Alliance for Dermatology's employees can sit down and enjoy the outdoors protected from the Sun and the elements. Our hats are off to AAD's commitement to the happiness and well being of thier employees. May they enjoy many relaxing lunch breaks to come! PLANT OF THE MONTH

Amaryllis
(Hippeastrum x hybridum)
Amaryllis is a popular flowering plant in Florida gardens. Standing as tall as three feet, it has trumpet shaped flowers which can be colored in shades of pink, red, orange, slamon, and white. They can also be found with spectacular striped and multi-colored blooms.
Grown from bulbs, Amaryliss does well in Florida as a regular outdoor garden plant, but is usually cultivated elsewhere as a container plant. The best time to plant bulbs is in the cold to cooler months of September to February, or just before the warmer spring weather comes around (see our video Green Goodie at the top of the page to see how to plant bulbs).
To get the most visual bang for your buck, plant Amaryliss in groups of the same color with an eye towards contrasting the color to what is around it. Try darker colored flowers against light backgrounds and white, or light blooms, against dark backgrounds.
For more detailed information about Amaryliss and its' care please visit the following page provided by the University of Florida IFAS Extension..

FREQUENTLY
ASKED
QUESTION
What material is better for building my deck, wood or composit?
There is no definitive answer. They both have advantages and disadvantages.
Pressure treated pine has a more earthy and organic appearance, is usually less expensive, and if properly cared for, can last for many years. In addition, it can be stained any color you like. However, it can be inconsistent in shape and texture. It is also prone to cracking and splintering , which can lead to the occasional painful sliver.
Composit decking is consistently shaped and therefore has a much more neat and orderly finished look. It is also smooth enough to walk on in bare feet without worrying about wood splinters. Its main disadvantage at this time is durability, price, and a fairly limited number of color choices.
In choosing between the two, the better choice depends on your budget, durability expectations, and color preferences. Also, don't forget to consider whether bare feet or little hands (children) will be getting a lot of contact time.
Let us know what questions you have. Best of luck, and stay green!
