 | | Vines, ground coverings, and ornamental grasses usually become established quite quickly, but if planting them in January you will need to water them daily for the first few weeks, then every other day for a few more additional weeks. |
 | DILL & CHIVE DIP   Here is a quick and delicious recipe you can make with fresh herbs that usually do well in the garden during colder winter months

1/3 cup sour cream 1/3 cup plain yogurt 2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives 2 teaspoons fresh chopped dill 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 dash of white pepper     Combine ingredients, chill and serve with fresh veggies, bread, or crackers.     | | | | |
 |   GREEN GOODIE!   Winter is the time to train your lawn to develope a deeper root system. Research shows that the taller the blades, the deeper the root. So, try to minimize your waterings and cut the grass a little higher to encourage healthier root growth. |

Project of the Month The 2 Day Pergola
| | | Click to see time lapse |
What is a "2 Day Pergola"?   Our clients have often called upon us to build them artistically ornate pergolas and garden structures to serve as center pieces for their outdoor living spaces. We love putting our creative efforts and skills to work to create pieces which stand alone based on their beauty and ornamentation, and we are prideful about taking the time to build these fine structures as only we know how to do it.    But sometimes our clients are more qualified to add their own ornamentations in the form of beautiful hanging plants and crafts. Therefore the added time and cost associated with building an artistically complex structure is unnecessary. Thus, we perfected what we call the "2 Day Pergola". Simple, yet beautiful, it is meant to play a supporting role by providing a shaded cloister for orchids, climbing vines, potted topiaries, or anything else which just needs a suitable stage to show off its natural beauty.     Weather permitting, the project takes two days for us to complete and then the finishing touches are left to the creative eye of the client. We are always eager to come back and see how our "2 Day Pergola" has been dressed up by the homeowner. Here is a time lapse of our latest example from a home in Odessa....    Click the facebook icon to see a time lapse of our 2 Day Pergola.

 Lolium multiflorum
December was unusually cold and dry this year and many Floridians are seeing their lawns turn into a dingy, depressing, brown mat. This doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with your lawn. St. Augustine grass naturally goes dormant throughout most of Florida during the Winter months. When warmer temperatures and moisture return in the spring, your yard should begin to recover the plush green tones we Floridians are used to seeing in our vegetation. But what are we to do in the meantime?    Fortunately, there is a gardening equivalent of a temporary "Band-aide" to keep our lawns green until they can heal themselves in the Spring. If you haven't already done it,  it's not to late in the season to grow a rich coat of beautiful, green, Winter Rye Grass throughout your yard by doing something called "over-seeding".    Over-seeding is a gardening term for planting seed over an area which already has plant fauna. The simple beauty of the concept is that Winter Rye Grass thrives in the cooler, drier months of winter then dies out when Spring returns. This is at right about the same time that St. Augustine grass comes out of dormancy, so you can have a nice green lawn year round.   Sowing your yard with Winter Rye is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to keep your yard green and protect it from erosion during the Winter months. To see easy step by step instructions and guidelines about over-seeding your yard with Winter Rye Grass please follow the link from the University of Florida below. Best of luck, and stay green!  http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep098 |
 |   WE NEVER KNEW!  1.  Now that's multi-tasking...
-Leonardo DaVinci could write with one hand while drawing                with the other one! 2. I guess they just weren't cat people...               -The only domesticated animal not mentioned in the                bible is the cat. 3. Hey buddy! Can you spare some loose change?               - The three wealthiest families in the world have more assets                than the combined wealth of the 48 poorest nations. 4. Why don't you call more often?                - Alexander Graham Bell never called his wife or mother to               say hello. They were both deaf.  5. I think, therfore...          - "I am" is the shortest complete sentence in the english language.
