Project of the Month
Snell Isle Pergola
| Click to see us building it! | Our Client on Snell Isle had an incredibly beautiful home on The St. Pete side of Tampa Bay. But it had one big problem. The kitchen and family room had spacious East facing windows which generated huge amounts of heat until after mid-day. They needed a break from the sun, but didn't want to sacrifice thier view of the bay. The solution was this beautiful cypress pergola with architectural connectors. It covers thier outdoor kitchen area, brings the pool and patio area together, and most importantly, shades thier bay windows without obstructing the view or making them feel like they are looking out the mouth of a cave. Keep those beautiful Snell Isle mornings coming! See the photo album of this project at http://www.facebook.com/gardencarpentrypros?v=photos&ref=mf

PLANT OF THE MONTH
by Pauhl Gazlay
SNAP DRAGON
(Antirrhinum majus)
| Click for more detailed info |
Snapdragon is an extremely popular flower for a number of reasons. It has an elegant and exoctic profile which accentuates its appeal. It comes in a wide variety of beautiful and attractive colors (pretty much anything but blue), and its petals even open into a mouth which resembles a dragon head when squeezed from the sides (hence the name:snapdragon).
December is the time in Central Florida that snapdragons come into bloom, which is great because it gives homeowners the chance to add beautiful color to thier properties at a time when much of our lush greenery is beginning to loose its vibrancy. They can also tolorate frost and even a brief freeze, which makes them ideal winter plants for Florida.
Some things to keep in mind about growing snapdragons: they should be planted in well drained, rich soil. They prefer direct sun, but can manage in small amounts of shade. If you are transplanting them, water frequently for the first couple of weeks (just keep the soil moist). After that, water when the top inch of soil is dry, and remember to deadhead while they are still just a few inches tall, this will encourage fuller branch growth.
With proper care, your snapdragons should provide you with beautiful color for most of the winter, so enjoy!
