GREEN

For gardeners who compost, November is a good time to work organic matter into your beds so that it can fully decompose prior to next summer's growing season.

 Control Garden Nematodes!!

Organic matter such as compost or manures improves the capacity of the soil to hold water and nutrients and, in turn, improves plant vigor and resistance to pests like nematodes.

With heating and cooling accounting for an average of 56% of household energy consumption, here are five ways to save money on energy costs.

1. Installing and using a programable thermostat can save up to $180/year.

2. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve heating and cooling efficiency by up 20%.

3. Check all gas (or oil) connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and heat exchanger. Improperly operating gas (or oil) connections are a fire hazard and can contribute to health problems. A dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger causes improper burner operation. Either can cause the equipment to operate less safely and efficiently.

4. Installing Energy Star appliances  more eficiantly warms and cools your home. They also qualify you for government and utility company rebates.

5. Conduct an Energy Assessment on your home: The ENERGY STAR Home Advisor can provide you with recommended home improvement projects to increase energy efficiency

Cooler weather and heavy dew can cause fungal problems in your yard and garden.  This is a good time to adjust sprinklers to water in the morning only, so as to avoid fungal leaf spotting on lawns and some shrubbery. Watering any time between 2-10 a.m. minimizes fungal problems.

 PLANT OF THE MONTH
TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum)

Forget about those things they are calling tomatoes in the produce section at the grocery store. You haven't tasted a tomato until you've had one fresh from the garden!

Not only are tomatos delcious, they are great for your health too! Tomatoes are high in a potent anti-oxidant called Lycopene as well as in vitamines A, B, and C, potassium, iron, and phosphorus.

The good news is that tomatos are fairly easy to grow in Florida, as they love lots of sunlight and are not too particular about soil type. They can even be grown in pots and containers by apartment and condo dwellers.

The tomato is versatile, hardy, and healthy. It is probably a key ingredient in some of your favorite dishes, and it has its very own website so you can learn all about its many types and varieties, not to mention how to grow it. As for eating them...I'm sure you can manage that on your own!

WE WOULD LIKE TO...

Each month we will use this segment to highlight some things we would like to see or do. It will usually include a project we've always wanted to try, and then some things we would like to see happen in the world around us.

 1. Build a series of small square wooden decks in someone's yard which would act as islands for placing potted plants and vignettes upon.  Lance & Pauhl- Gardencarpentry.com

2. See the USF Bulls beat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in football this year.  Pauhl- Gardencarpentry.com

3. See politicians spend more time finding solutions and less time slinging mud.  Phillip- Tarpon Springs

4. See Lance catch more balls in the outfield during kickball league.  Lance- Gardencarpentry.com

5. See less panhandling at highway intersections.

Project of the Month
Retire The Pool
gardencarpentry.com retire the pool
Click anywhere to see how we did it!

But what does one do with a useless pool in a birdcage? Leave it empty and it's an eyesore as well as a liability. Fill it in with dirt? Not any better. The answer was right under our noses...make that under our feet.

We built a deck inside the pool. Now our client has a much larger area under his pool cage for relaxing and entertaining. He has a huge extra storage space under the deck, and best of all, no more maintainance, upkeep, and added energy and water bills. Not a bad trade off!

This year, like many of you, I have plans to sit down at the table with my family and friends to a feast of food and conversation.  One of our traditions is that each person gathered around the table must tell the group what it is he or she is most thankfull  for.  There will be lots of giggles and shaky voices as each of us tries to come up with something original and witty, and everyone will get a chance to say their peace about what is most important to them.  That's one of the things I am most thankful for;  There will be a group of people whom I know and love sitting together sharing a nice meal and each others company, if only for the day.
May Peace and happiness bless all of our homes this Thanksgiving and may we all get to be with the people we love most, if only for the day.

Best Wishes,
Lance Hans
