Clean StartsWanna start a new bed or expand an existing one?  Instead of pulling all the weeds by hand or spraying toxic chemicals in your garden, cover the desired area with black trash bags and hold them down with bricks or dirt.
In 2-3 weeks the lack or sunlight and water will clear the area of all vegetation and you'll be able to prepare the soil for planting new flora.  No chemicals, and less work to clear any area you want.  Reuse the bags again for outside cans or to repeat the process.

Cat's Meow
Catnip is an herb  commonly used to stuff in toys or feed to cats for their enjoyment. However, the oil from this plant has actually been found to be more than ten times better at repelling mosquitoes than DEET. Planting this plant near your patio or deck will help repel mosquitoes. |

 | Goodie Which wood would you like? `
When using wood in your vegtable garden as borders or stakes, be sure the wood is UNTREATED.
Cypress and Cedar are good alternatives to the chemicaly injected wood that will leach into your garden soil. These woods tend to do well against rot and bugs also. |

 | Plant Of The Month  Coleus       Solenostemon
This long lasting southeast Asian species (Solenostemon scutellarioides) have been selected for their colorful variegated leaves, typically with sharp contrast between the colors; the leaves may be green, pink, yellow, black (a very dark purple), maroon, and red (somewhat resembling the unrelated caladium). New cultivars with varieties of colors are constantly being made. The plants grow well in moist well-drained soil, and typically grow 18"-36" m tall, though some may grow as tall as 6 feet. Coleusare typically grown as ornamental plants. They are heat-tolerant, but they do best partial shade. The colors of the plant are typically more intense in shaded areas rather than in full sun, and the plants will require less water there. Coleus also make low-maintenance houseplants,  and can often be propagated by clipping a length of stem just below the leaves and putting the stem in water to root. The plant's flowers grow on a stem above that stem's leaves, and tend to be purple and quite small in comparison to the leaves. The plant is not generally grown for its flowers, as it promotes stem elongation (remove to halt this).                                 |
