Project of the Month
Click for more photos | Our client needed a unique centerpiece for their beautiful courtyard pool area. This project combines a cantilevered pergola, stone hearth, and a water fountain for a stunning poolside comfort spot!
Once the vines grow into the canopy of the pergola this piece will present an incredibly inviting outdoor room for anytime of the year. In the summertime it provides a shady place to retreat to next to the pool. In the wintertime our client can take a brisk swim and then dry off next to a cozy fire. There was a time when Gardencarpentry.com would refuse to have anything to do with pergolas which were made of vinyl. "We are craftsmen, and pergolas made out of plastic are beneath us" we declared! We also objected on the moral grounds of vinyl being an environmentally unfriendly product of petroleum. Never-the-less, as businessmen, we eventually decided that if a client insists on vinyl then so be it! Different strokes for different folks, right? If they buy it, we will build it... or assemble it in this case.
So in keeping with our new found open arms attitude we recently took on the assembly of Eden brand's Venetian pergola. There were some things I liked about this pre-fabricated product. There were some downsides as well. To be fair let me start with the positives.

Crape Myrtle
(Lagerstroemia)
Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia) is one of the most versatile landscape plants for sunny locations. They are available for use as medium trees, small trees, shrubs, groundcovers, container plants, large perennial bedding plants and hanging baskets.
L. indica has been cultivated as an ornamental for centuries and was introduced to the southern United States over one hundred and fifty years ago. In Florida crape myrtle is valued as a landscape plant for its prolific summer flowers, heat and drought tolerance, and year-round landscape interest. Flowering begins as early as May in some cultivars and continues into the fall. Color ranges include shades of purple, lavender, white, pink and red, including "true" red, a relatively recent development. Some cultivars have bicolor flowers (two colors on each petal).
Leaves are often tinged red in the spring and turn dark green by summer. When the leaves fall in winter, crape myrtle becomes a living sculpture. The trunk and branches of tree-form plants have an attractively gnarled, sinuous character with smooth bark.

Well-established plants are extremely drought tolerant and have low fertility requirements, although they respond to fertilizer and water with lush growth. Crape myrtle has low salt tolerance, so it should not be irrigated with saline water or used near the coast unless it is well-protected from saline conditions.
At gardencarpentry.com we have noticed that crape myrtle is harder to come by as summer draws to a close, so be on the lookout for opportunities to add them to your landscape throughout July.
