Winter is the Time!!

The Winter months are drier so  plants tend to go dormant, at least for a short period.  Now is the time to install garden features such as pergolas and arbors.  Less rain means quicker installation with less impact on your landscaping.  Sanding and staining is also easier because less moisture in the air  makes for better adhesion.   Get that fence, pergola, or bench refinished for longer life.

Outdoor wooden projects such as fences and arbors are as dry now as they will be all year.  If you have a project that needs staining, the wood will be easiest to prepare and the paint or stain will bond best in temperatures above fifty degrees with low humidity.

Almost every city has a neighborhood known for its incredible holiday decorations and lights. Places where cars line up in the evenings to drive around and see the imaginations of homeowners outlined in incredible displays of light. Now, come January, good taste and tradition calls for the shows to be packed up for the year and boxed away until the next holiday season. But wait, beautiful outdoor lighting isn't just for Christmas any more! The magic of outdoor holiday lighting can continue year round, without complaints from the neighbors. Landscape lighting is a great way to maintain a sense of wonder on your property and extend your living space to the outdoors at the time of year when it is most enjoyable to be outside!

Best of all, the price is flexible! You can go the economy route with a few strands of strategically placed Christmas lights or, for an unforgettable impression, have the job done by professionals. Either way is easy. Adding lighting to your landscape will really change the way you feel about your outdoor areas...for the better! Here is some helpful information about the three types of lighting we see the most....

Florida's Frozen TundraFlorida's Frozen Tundra

Gone.   It's all gone!!!  The Lilies, the Inpatients, the Bananas.  Even the Jamaican Poinsettia. Brownish- yellow, wilting leaves and black, lifeless flowers are everywhere.  Mother nature has left ice on my wind shield and dead frogs in my bird bath. My many hours of pruning and mulching have been in vain.  My potting and transplanting- all for nothing.  How can the cold be so cruel, so heartless? I can't go on.   All is Lost!!......My beautiful garden is ruined and there's nothing I can do to save it.

That's what all the painsi gardeners have been crying over the last 10 days as the frozen Tundra of Florida has dipped into the teens. The news is full of people who are mad because it's colder in Tampa than in Bangor (true fact).  It seems we actually got a taste of what it's like to live "up north" again.

Well good for us, I say.  There are lots of good things about the cold weather, and I've made a list to brighten the outlook on your polar landscape....

Your landscaping will more than likely survive and be stronger.  Don't dig anything out yet, it's been cold, but we've warmed up most days into the 50's, so the roots of your plants have stayed safe.  Be patient and see if the green peaks back through.  We're almost out of the Winter, so just be patient.

The Springtime will be very green.  Plants have been naturally pruned  and those that didn't pass away, will burst open with life in about six weeks.  The contrast in seasons is gonna be great!

We definitely killed off some bugs!!!  In addition to the number of insects that froze, frosts cut back on pests the following Spring by reducing food sources and eliminating some habitat.  Wasps, mosquitoes, chinch bugs....Who's laughing now?

You finally get to wear that wool turtleneck and those moccasin boots that hang out in your closet occupying valuable "flip-flop space"

and finally.....

It's cold.  Have fun and enjoy it.  Have some apple cider or hot cocoa now.  Make some of Grandma's soup.  Because in about 2 months, it's gonna be back to Sweating to the Oldies in Florida. Except there'll be no Richard Simmons, you'll just be walking from your car to the front door.
rosemary- really easy to grow- www.gardencarpentry. com Plant of the Month
 Rosemary (Rosmarinu Officinalis)
Don't let that rosemary topiary you picked up during the holidays go to waste.  This is one of my favorite herbs because it can be pruned into shape, it's edible, and it's really easy to care for!!

Rosemary is a woody, perineal herb with fragrant, evergreen leaves.  It can be pruned to form topiaries and does well in dry soils.  This plant comes to us from the Mediterranean, where it is often found growing near the sea.  If well maintained, rosemary can grow 3-5 feet tall.  It may Bloom pink, white, purple, or blue, often in the warm days of late winter and early spring.

This plant is really easy for beginners and can be propagated by simply clipping 4-6 inch shoots and placing them into  potting soil.  Rosemary grows best in dry, neutral soil, and does not tolerate water logging.  It will do great on your porch or under the pergola, where it will get the afternoon sun.  Grown in a pot, it's best to keep this herb trimmed into a topiary, but in the yard, it will grow quite large.
rosemary- can grow 3-5 feet tall www.gardencarpentry.com
One of the best features of this plant, is that you can eat it. Rosemary is really high in iron, calcium, and Vitamin B6.  This herb  also has high carnosic acid, which may help in the fight against Alzheimer's and Lou Gerhig's Disease.  You can use it fresh or dried in a variety of Mediterranean dishes.
So don't through that Rosemary away.  Transfer it to a well draining pot, and give it about 6 hours of sun light a day.  Prune it before you have guests in your garden will fill the air it's delightful fragrance.

I

reap what you sow

I'll be planting a lot of seeds this year,   I will, no doubt, have to remind myself to be patient.  Lots of care will be necessary and I'll work hard to build Strength and Balance.  I won't get to spend as much time enjoying them as I'd like, but I never do.

I will sow seeds this year that will grow and blossom.  I will tend them and make them safe.  And they will amaze me and teach me things I had forgotten.   And  at the end of the year, my sons will a year older, and I will have helped them to on their way to be   good men.

Hope you all take time to sow some seeds this year
