Winter is the Time!!
The Winter months are drier so plants tend to go dormant, at least for a short period. Now is the time to install garden features such as pergolas and arbors. Less rain means quicker installation with less impact on your landscaping. Sanding and staining is also easier because less moisture in the air makes for better adhesion. Get that fence, pergola, or bench refinished for longer life. |
Goodie
____________ During the Winter months, only water your lawn once every other week. This saves water and actually promotes healthy root growth, which helps keep your lawn green during dry spells. |

Wood vs Vinyl
We get a lot of questions concerning Vinyl as an alternative to the custom wooden structures we craft. When comparing vinyl to wood as a material for building garden structures such as pergolas, arbors, fences, and gates, we have found four definite reasons to steer clear of vinyl.... 1) Environmental Impact- Vinyl, or Poly-Vinyl carbonate (PVC), is a chemical/petroleum bi-product. The production process for vinyl relies heavily on non-renewable foreign oil supplies and creates a large degree of environmental contaminates. Vinyl itself is non-biodegradable. That is why underground sewer and drainage pipes are often made from PVC. It lasts for decades or longer underground without breaking down. Now, imagine your vinyl fence in a landfill... By contrast, since North American lumber providers actively manage forests to ensure a permanent supply of lumber, domestically grown wood is a renewable resource! Happily, wood is biodegradable and, as a building material, requires a low degree of processing to bring it to market. It will last for years as part of a building structure, but will degrade into fresh soil relatively quickly in a landfill. Wood is Practical, Beautiful & Renewable. Used for millennia, it remains the original green building material! To learn more about wood and vinyl please visit our blog at...www.gardencarpentry.com/blog |

Project of the month
Pergola Saves the vantage, pocketbook, and perhaps the Earth
From sunrise until late afternoon, the Sun was blazing through the East facing bay windows of this south St. Pete home! The air conditioner ran constantly, but to no avail. What good is a beautiful view of the Bay if you have to break a sweat in your own living room to see it?
Our clients tried interior vertical blinds, but they blocked the view and still let the windows behind them conduct heat. They tried growing flowering vines, but they grew out of control and permanently obscured the view of the outside world.
What can be done in order to have a great view, preserve a comfortable temperature, and save energy?
The Solution: Gardencarpentry.com built a simple but beautiful pergola to create a visual frame around the offending bay windows. The pergola enhanced the visual appeal of the house from outside and allowed the bougainvillea form a canopy over the windows. This shielded the living room from the intense heat of the sun and preserved the spectacular view of the Bay.
If the sun is driving you out of the favorite room in your house and pushing your A/C to its limits, let Gardencarpentry.com help. Turn that air conditioner off, sit down, and enjoy!

Plant of the Month
Petunias
Petunias are popular and reliable flowering ornamental plants. Versatile annuals, petunias can be used in flower beds, hanging baskets, window boxes and other types of containers. They also can be used as cut flowers. The blossoms of petunias come in many colors with petal edges that are straight or ruffled. Petunias do best in full sun, although they will tolerate several hours of light shade a day. The frequency of watering will depend on the type of soil, weather conditions and the amount of mulch. Mulch will not only reduce soil water evaporation but will also reduce splashing of water onto the lower leaves, help maintain moderate soil temperatures and reduce weed competition. Do not allow the soil around the plants to remain excessively wet for several days, as this can lead to stunted, chlorotic growth or disease. "Pinching" the plants can be used to increase the number of flowering stems and discourage excessive vegetative growth. Remove old flowers (dead heads) when they start to fade to encourage repeat blooming.
