Film Festival: Rwanda and Oil & Water

SEATTLE, WA - April 5, 2012

Two Seattle filmmaking teams take surprising looks into human rights issues, and provide unique ways to view the world around them.

On Tuesday, May 1 from 7-8:30pm, Inflatable Film and Stir It Up Productions will present "Beyond Borders - An Evening of Film." The filmmaking teams will present clips of their documentaries in progress - Film Festival: Rwanda and Oil & Water.  See selected scenes and meet the filmmakers - Leah Warshawski, Francine Strickwerda, and Laurel Spellman Smith - during a Q&A session.

Years in the making, each film examines a tragedy - environmental disaster and genocide - and finds compelling stories of change and hope.

The event is sponsored by 4Culture, the cultural services agency for King County, Washington.  The filmmakers are recipients of the 2011 Individual Artist Project award from 4Culture.

Film Festival: Rwanda is a film about three Rwandan filmmakers - led by the humble and compelling Ayuub Mago - working to restore peace and hope to their country through film.  Filmed over 5 years, Film Festival: Rwanda is an intimate and refreshing story about art changing lives.  This film is currently in post-production.

Oil & Water is the story of two boys coming of age in the middle of one of he world's worst toxic disasters. Hugo fights for the survival of his Cofan tribe in the Ecuadorian Amazon, while David launches the world's first company to "fair trade" certify oil. Shot over 6 years so far, Oil & Water is a shocking and inspiring David and Goliath story. Oil & Water is being produced for PBS and is funded in part by Independent Television Service and the MacArthur Foundation.
