Revised Common Lectionary Readings for Sunday, February 12, 2012, the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)lectionary

On my first day of vacation Carrie and I went and saw "Joyful Noise" starring Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, Keke Palmer, and Jeremy Jordan. It is the story of a small town Georgia church choir in a big time music competition. There were lots of things that I liked about the movie, some things that challenged me, some that made me cringe, but overall we had a good time.
Looking back on the whole movie going experience there are a lot of questions I have:
I wonder why Carrie and I were the only two people in the theater for this uplifting movie.
I wonder if the movie Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter - which had a big billboard right outside of the theater entrance - will be as empty on opening day.
I wondered about the expectations people have when they come to church and the challenge of maintaining divine worship in an entertainment driven culture.
I wonder if it wouldn't be good to go to a Saturday matinee with a group from the church, to experience this movie together, and then to have dinner afterwards and wonder.

I invite you to come and bring a friend to Joyful Noise playing at N.Dekalb Mall AMC on Saturday February 18th at 12:25. Immediately after the show we will head over to Anthony's in Scottsdale to enjoy pizza, wings, and talk about the movie. If you have already seen Joyful Noise you are invited to join us at Anthony's at 2:30.
If you would like to carpool, meet in the upper parking lot of the church by 12:10. I have some movie passes so let me know if you need one to cover the cost of the movie. Please let me know if you are going to join us so that I can plan ahead and notify you if they change the show time. George's cell 404.784.0382.

Hope to see you there!

In the joy of Christ,
George

Ash

February 22nd at 12:00 and 6:00pm in the Sanctuary

Ash Wednesday is the first day in our Lenten journey as a church. During Lent we prepare for the miracle of Easter Sunday through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. The ashes we receive are a physical reminder of the spiritual nature of our journey.
Mr. Jones, Music Director for MDPCCP, will be leading the music during worship and is working with the children for a special musical offering at the 12:00 service. Please make every effort to begin this season of Lent in worship with us on Ash Wednesday.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

RADICAL HOSPITALITY LUNCHEON

The Mission and Membership Committee will be hosting our first Radical Hospitality Luncheon on February 19th immediately after worship from 12-2pm. Lunch and materials will be provided.

Please call the church office 404-292-8212 to sign up.

Radical hospitality is our active desire to invite, welcome, receive, and care for strangers until they find a spiritual home and discover for themselves the unending richness of life in Christ. How we invite, welcome, and care for visitors and guests is a practice that must be nurtured and developed by the whole congregation! Come and grow in faith and faithfulness!

YOUTH PROGRAM

Save the date! - The MDPC youth will be joining with the youth from Columbia Presbyterian Church in a service event on Saturday, 2/25. We will most likely be serving at a homeless shelter in the afternoon; details are being worked out this week. Steven will have final details by Sunday.

CONFIRMATION CLASS

The youth will be beginning a confirmation class on Sunday, March 4 during the Sunday school hour. This eight-week class will help youth understand and process their faith, and what it means to be a member of the church. We will be using the denominational "We Believe" curriculum for this class.

As an optional addition to the confirmation class, MDPC youth have the opportunity to attend a Presbytery-wide Confirmation Retreat at Calvin Center on March 16-18. This retreat is open to all youth, even if they're not participating in the confirmation class. The theme for the weekend is the Sacraments, and youth will learn all about those, and what they mean to us as Christians. This retreat will also include recreational time with all of the favorite Calvin Center activities - archery, horseback riding, high ropes course, etc. Any youth or parents who would like more information on the confirmation class or retreat should contact Steven Bohn at steven@calvincenter.org."

ATLANTA FOOD BANK HUNGER WALK

hunger walk

The youth will be participating in the Atlanta Community Food Bank 5K Hunger Walk on 3/11/12. This is a fun opportunity for our youth to go downtown and walk with thousands of others to raise money to fight hunger in our city. All funds raised go towards the efforts of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Participation in the walk is free; however any youth who raises at least $25 gets a 2012 Hunger Walk T-shirt. The event starts at noon, and the youth will be leaving for Turner Field when church ends. I will need parents to help drive youth. After the walk, the youth will be having an after-event party back at MDPC with pizza, games, and more fun! If your youth is going to attend this event please email Steven Bohn at steven@calvincenter.org."
