Revised Common Lectionary Readings for Sunday, May 8, 2011, the Third Sunday of Easter (Year A)
Sunday, May 8th, is Mother's Day. I always think of that old Eddy Arnold song
M-O-T-H-E-R on Mother's Day.
"M" is for the mercy she possesses.
"O" means that I owe her all I own.
"T" is for her tender, sweet caresses.
"H" is for her hands that made a home.
"E" means ev'rything she's done to help me.
"R" means real and regular, you see.
Put them all together they spell MOTHER, a word that means the world to me.
Each and every one of us has had a mother, or mother figure, who has helped us along the way. While the image of God as Mother may be strange to many, there are plenty of images in the Bible. My favorite image comes from Matthew 23:37, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings." May the love of God surround all of the women of the world this Sunday like the gathering wings of a mother hen.
Peace of Christ Always,
George
