Revised Common Lectionary Readings for Sunday, February 27, 2011, the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)
I am amazed at how the lectionary seems to be perfectly sychronized with events at MDPC. On my first Sunday Haggai, which only shows up once or twice in the three year cycle, was the lectionary reading and that text read, "I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts." A pretty good reading to preach on a pastor's first day in the pulpit; I believe we are moving in new ways to live into that prophetic word for us.
One of the new things that is happening is the adult Christian education series, led by Jihyun Oh; the first topic of this series is on Stewardship of Creation. This study will explore our responsibility as stewards of God's creation through Biblical and theological lenses. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the lectionary and found this week's reading is 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, which says, "Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy."
All are welcome to join us at 9:15 as we explore God's Word in a new format, with our new Parish Associate, listening for the new ways in which God is calling us to be trustworthy stewards of God's creation.
Peace of Christ always,
George

| WELCOME JIHYUN OH! | |
The Session formally welcomed Jihyun Oh as our Parish Associate. Her primary focus will be leading our new format adult Christian education series. She currently serves as a chaplain at Grady Hospital and is working on a Doctorate of Ministry at Columbia Theological Seminary. For this and every blessing, praise be to God.

| COMMUNION TRAINING | | |
February 27
Through April, the Sunday before Communion Sunday we will be having Elder Training for Communion immediately after church service. Immediately following this Sunday's worship we will be gathering in the library for a thirty minute exploration of communion. Elders who wish to bring communion to our homebound must attend one of these training sessions. Elders who are serving on March 6th are encouraged to attend. |
| FAITHFUL ONES | | |
Faithful Ones started at Shallowford Presbyterian Church. We have adopted it as a way of demonstrating our commitment during the Prayer of Dedication in a very visual way. Everybody is encouraged to put in a $1 bill, a Faithful One, above their regular offering, so that our collection plates will be filled to overflowing as we present our offering to God. The benefit of putting something in the plate as it passes will impact the whole congregation on many levels.
Faithful Ones:
§ Enables those who write monthly checks to participate each week in the collection.
§ Sets an example for our children about the importance of returning a portion of what we have, given to us by God, on a regular basis.
§ Builds an ethos of giving that is modeled after the early church described in Acts.
§ It is a easy way for each and every person to give to the mission and ministries of the church.
If you don't have a Faithful One on Sunday, Faithful Fives are also welcome!

| HUNGER WALK - 2011 | |
March 13
Memorial Drive will be participating in the HungerWalk again this year. It's easier than ever to donate to this cause. Just click on the link below, click on "Support Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church", and fill out the online donation form.
http://acfb.convio.net/site/TR/HungerWalkPATH/HungerWalk?team_id=10640&pg=team&fr_id=1300
Don't want to do an online donation? You can always send a check (payable to MDPC, but note in the memo "HungerWalk"). You'll be part of a 27-year effort that will not only make you feel great, but will also make an incredible difference in the lives of our fellow Georgians. With demand for food assistance up 30% last year, your help is needed now more than ever. Our donations help to support P.A.T.H. (Presbyterian Answer To Hunger). Our goal right now is to raise $500.00. Surely we can do that (and maybe more)!
Our youth will be traversing the roads of Atlanta the day of the HungerWalk. If you are so inclined (it's just 5K!), you are welcome to join them. Otherwise, please consider making a donation. |
