Advent

board

Most of us think of Advent as the time of expectant waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day.  It is also the beginning of the new liturgical year.  The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus which is the translation of the Greek word parousia.  The Parousia however is most commonly used in reference to the Second Coming of Christ.  We need to remember that Advent is not only about our waiting for the birth of 6 pound 9 ounce baby Jesus in a manger, but it is also a reminder that we are waiting for the return of Christ and the coming Kingdom of God.

George Tatro

Installation Service

The Service of Installation for the Rev. George Tatro will take place during worship on the first Sunday of Advent, November 28.

The Rev. Joe Evans, of Church of the Good Shepherd, will be our guest preacher and will join; Rev. Barry Davies, Rev. Kim Levert of Columbia Theological Seminary's International Programs, our own Elder Sarah Martin-Elam, Elder Ralph Wedd of Church of the New Covenant, Elder Chip Plyler of Norcross Presbyterian, and Elder David York in the Installation.

An Installation is a service in which we promise to each other to be faithful in our journey together, to learn from each other, and to pray together for the church and God's guidance.   Because it is a commitment that we are making to each other your participation is very important and I do hope you will be able to attend.  The Installation will occur during the normal worship hour.

PW Mission - Thank Offering

The Thank Offering began in 1888 when each woman was urged to give one dollar over and above her usual contribution to the Women's General Missionary Society, as PWa "thank offering to her Lord".  This expression of thanksgiving now is an important part of P.W.  At least 40% of this offering supports health ministries throughout the world.  The remaining 60% funds new creative ideas for mission.

The 2010 Thank Offering funded 31 projects from aiding the purchase of hygiene kits for victims in Minnesota to rebuilding a worship center in Haiti that was destroyed by the 2010 earthquake.  The Creative Ministries Offering Committee reviewed 84 proposals, and selected 16 national (including a Montessori Preschool in Macon, GA) and 15 international projects to receive a share of the $870,058. This special offering will be collected on November 28, 2010.
