Thought For The Week

The sermon texts for Sunday, October 24, are Joshua 3:7-4:7 and Psalm 107, and the sermon title is Thank You Gifts.

This is Dedication Sunday, when we will offer our time & talent commitments, and our pledges of financial support for the ministry of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.  Following the service, we will enjoy lunch together in the Jim Guess Activities Building.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all the ways you have welcomed and supported me as your interim pastor.  One of the greatest privileges of pastoral ministry is being invited to share in people's lives, and I am grateful for the ways in which you have opened your hearts to me during the past two years.  The purpose of interim ministry is to help prepare a congregation for the next chapter of its ministry and mission, and I believe that MDPC is about to enter an exciting and wonderful future.  Know that my prayers will be with George Tatro and all of you as you serve God in new and wonderful ways in the days and years ahead.   May God bless and keep you, now and always.

Invitation

Presbyterian Women Circle 1 would like to invite all women of the church who are interested in the fun and fellowship of deepening friendships to join us at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 28, in the Donnell Building.   We will discuss at that time when and where we want to hold future meetings in order to accommodate as many of us as possible.

We ask that each person bring a small salad or a few sandwiches to share.    Please come and join us!

P.W. Missions - BIBS

P.W. spends time, energy, and money to benefit certain missions.  Each month, a different mission will be highlighted.  This month, we'll focus on BIBS for the Frasier Center.

For several years, Clif Trussell has single-handedly made 100's of bibs for the Frasier Center, Atlanta's Cerebral Palsy Center.  The Frasier Center is no longer providing towels for these bibs, but Clif is willing to continue making them.  If you would be interested in assisting with this P.W. mission, you can bring towels to the church office.  Once we get the towels, we can set up a workday, get directions from Clif, bring our scissors, and cut the bibs.

If you prefer, you can write a check to MDPC-PW, marked Bibs. Realizing that many are unable to contribute financially to these missions, we ask for your prayers.

Habitat for Humanity Day One

October 10, 2010

new hammerclipOur work day began at 8am at Habitat's warehouse in Atlanta. We signed in and received  identifying wrist bands and made our own name tags out of duct tape.  We were able to have a brief breakfast before having an orientation meeting where we were introduced to the homeowner, Chelseia Brown.  We then broke up into two groups. One group would stay at the warehouse and build walls while the other would go to the site to prepare the foundation for the erection of those walls.

Everyone, the experienced and the novice, was eager to assist and no job was too small to perform.  The day was exhausting but at the end of the day we had erected the inside walls, the outside walls and the porch.  What a great feeling!

Presbytery of Greater Atlanta - Press Announcement

The Council prayed, read scripture and deliberated for several hours to make staffing decisions in accordance with the authority granted to it at the October 2 meeting of presbytery.

There was universal agreement and appreciation for all the current staff but also a frank realization that we needed to proceed.

We moved forward in filling the following positions from the Organizational Chart adopted at Presbytery on October 2.  Staff were offered and accepted these positions immediately following the Council meeting.

Please welcome and celebrate the new roles our staff will be filling:

·  Neema Cyrus-Franklin will serve as our Communications Director

·  Donna Wells continues to serve as our Acting Stated Clerk

·  Gay Alston will serve as our Office Administrator

·  Gwen Hairston continues to serve as our Bookkeeper

·  Mardee Rightmyer will serve as a part time Congregational Consultant

  • Cassandra Morrow will serve as a full time Congregational Consultant
  • Penny Hill will serve as a full time Congregational Consultant

In accordance to the Presbytery decisions regarding the congregational consultant positions the Council plans to initiate the process of calling two Associate Presbyters for Congregational Growth and Vitality no later than the end of 2012. At that time presbytery will form search committees to conduct a search process in accordance with provisions in the Book of Order.  Cassandra Morrow and Penny Hill will be eligible to apply.

Unfortunately there were not enough positions for all our current staff.

Forrest Palmer and Mary Dyche will no longer be serving as Presbytery staff.  Council is very grateful for the year of service Mary Dyche offered the presbytery, and the staff will miss her faithful vibrant presence.

Council offered universal acclaim and thanksgiving for all the many years of faithful and fruitful service Forrest Palmer offered Jesus Christ through the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta.  We know that the presbytery staff will miss him and that our congregations will suffer from the loss of his service.

I know you will offer many prayers for them both.  I hope also you will take time to write them to express your thanksgiving to God for their service.

We hope to recognize Forrest Palmer's ministry at the November meeting of Presbytery.

The presbytery would like to invite individuals and congregations to send in monetary gifts to the Presbytery office for Forrest Palmer that we might give to him by the end of November. Please make checks payable to the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta and indicate "Forrest Palmer Thanksgiving Offering account 801526" in the memo.

Please be patient with the presbytery office for the next few months.  We will be operating with four less full time staff than we did a year ago. However, the staff met for four hours today to ensure a smooth transition for key ministry areas.

The Council and the staff are very excited about this new plan. We believe it will help the Living Waters of Jesus Christ to more richly flow from our small, medium, and large congregations.  We are thrilled with the opportunity to serve all of our congregations more directly by spending more time in your churches listening to your needs and providing important tools and resources you request.

Peace,

Tom Evans
