Mary Jane's Thought for the Week

A Prayer for Memorial Day (from the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship):

Righteous God, you rule the nations.  Guard brave men and women who risk themselves in battle for their country.  Give them compassion for enemies who also fight for patriotic causes.  Keep our sons and daughters from hate that hardens, or from scorekeeping with human lives.  Though they must be at war, let them live for peace, as eager for agreement as for victory.  Encourage them as they encourage one another, and never let hard duty separate them from loyalty to your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Summer Salad/Sandwich Study

Wednesday, June 2, 6:30-8:15 PM, is the second of our 10- week study based on Reggie McNeal's book and video, The Present Future:  Six Tough Questions for the Church.   In preparation for this week, please read John 4:1-42.

We will begin at 6:30 PM with a potluck "sandwich and salad" supper.  (Everyone will be asked to bring a salad or some sandwiches to share.)  During supper we will watch a video presenting the tough questions that churches face in our changing culture.  This will be followed by a time of discussion about how MDPC can address these questions

Lunch Box Program

Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church has joined Rock of Ages Lutheran Church and St. Timothy UMC in an outreach program that will offer lunch to persons in need on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We need volunteers to help with this new ecumenical venture in our neighborhood.  Please call Carol Cromley (404-292-1888) or Bob Dinwiddie (770-498-0766) to sign up and for more information. Food donations can be brought in to the church office.  A sample lunch box is in the church office.

Seminary Student Intern

This Tuesday Katie Archibald-Woodward begins her summer internship at MDPC.  She will be serving and learning at MPDC for 10 weeks this summer.  Some of you will remember meeting Katie at our Jazz Coffee House on May 8th.

In describing her vocations goals, Katie writes:  I believe I am called to share God's Word through music, specifically singing.  I hope to use this gift, in tandem with my passion for traveling and connecting with other cultures, to serve as a bridge-builder and agent of reconciliation around the globe.  This summer I hope to learn how to ask good questions of others and improve as a listener.  I would like the opportunity to learn more about and practice being a better music worship leader.  I also hope to learn more about the racial divides and tensions in Atlanta so I can discern my role within the struggle.

Please give Katie a warm MDPC welcome.
