"
Don't watch the scoreboard, focus on the game!" You've heard such counsel, haven't you? And, of course it's right.
Most teachers - me included - prefer that you invest into efforts, and
hope to reduce your natural obsession with rewards. We naturally
emphasize action over outcome, effort over result, and yes, some of us
fanatics even emphasize quantity over quality, believe it or not.
But ask any big biller for his or her honest preference and
they'll usually tell you that they care more about the Back-End than
the front. How do we balance this out?
The first thing is to recognize the difference between building and
sustaining success. You can't build success from scratch without some
form of mastery over the Front-End. In the beginning, everyone has to
create new discipline, long before the Back-End rewards can flow.
Yet, there truly is a powerful argument for focusing on Back-End
results, too. It is in the results that the truth of our efforts is
revealed.
The Back-End is where we win real attention and motivation. For
real performers, the Back-End is where we find the truth. Where many
will slough off "the numbers" if you're pounding away on phone time or
presentations, no one ever argues that a lack of "real results" is unimportant. For owners and managers, the Back-End numbers managed
properly provide a window into truth that just can't be argued. For
leadership, learning how to read Back-End numbers can guide you to the
kinds of decisions, interventions and yes, team composition decisions
you typically put off till later.
Let's go specific. There are four key metrics that provide a near-perfect Back-End picture. They are:
- Send Outs
- Placements
- Dollars Billed
- Cash In
A 12-month cycle of monthly data gives us every bit of information we
require. Any given calendar year will do and this one, now that we're
at the end of May already, provides plenty of data for most performers
with just these first five month's worth of outcomes.
Of the many benefits the numbers give you, perhaps the greatest is the
confidence you build as a leader. By knowing your outcomes and being
able to see the trends, the guidance and counsel you give is more than
just valuable to your followers. It compels their credibility and
consideration. As with dating, where we know the most confident suitor
wins, so also with management. Followers smell hesitation and lack of
confidence. They rightly reject such weak attempts on the part of leaders
who do not have the strength and power of truth on their side.
As a result of that, I'm truly excited to offer what I hope you'll find
to be an irresistible value. Let's recon your numbers, together! We'll look at the outcomes in a clear, simple, truly compelling format and we'll analyze the outcomes for the insight and answers you need.
