 20th Anniversary Gala
Sunday, June 12, 2011, 7:00 PM

A Tribute to Teachers
gala
I have celebrated each year the invaluable opportunity of having a wonderful group of people  sharing the same goals.   They are the leaders of their craft and the masters that set the tone for each program to succeed.  They are the teachers who are responsible for your child's success.

This anniversary is an important milestone for certain members of our faculty who have shared my unwavering pursuit of excellence.  They have been tested and proven.

They are:

Amy Beltrami - Amy joined WSPA in 1995.  She has kept the tap program growing steadily and has inspired countless students.  Her choreography has evolved, nailing the right formula for success at competitions while keeping them age appropriate and classy.

Tina Fargas-Newell, who's passion and patience in teaching the youngest of our students paid off by an unprecedented win of the "Hope Award" at the Youth America Grand Prix.  She has been with WSPA since 1996.

Patrick Rivera-Cruz, The Company director and my son.  I mention the latter with unimaginable pride.  Turning 25 at the end of this month, his remarkable work ethics and discipline is validated by the hundreds of followers who come to audition in his program.

Jessica Manalo, my protégé.  Her impeccable attention to detail for whatever task I give her contributes to the over-all success of WSPA.  She was a pioneering student from our humble beginnings in 1991.

Anthony Manaois - His soul thrives on Tahitian culture, bringing authenticity and pride to our Polynesian Program.  He joined WSPA in 2006.

In this Anniversary Gala, you will see greatness as you have never seen before on our WSPA stage.  Thanks to the professionalism and excellent training of the following teachers.

Lauren Main de Lucia joined us in 2008,  She has the most daunting task of training the upper levels of our ballet program.  Her calm and even-tempered leadership paved way to individual success of all our students.

Viktor Kabaniaev joined WSPA last year to begin the Professional Division, consequently raising the bar to world-class level, and securing the right direction for the elite group of students in ballet.

Anniversaries remind us to look back at the good times, but more importantly,  to look ahead and realize dreams and wishes in the future.

I thank the following teachers for their continuing contribution and assuring WSPA dreams come true:

Nene Nemenzo - joined WSPA in 2006.  She has succeeded in providing and securing the proper technique for our Polynesian students; assisting and yielding to Kumu Anthony for the success of the program.

Katie Kerwin - joined WSPA last year and has saved the Musical Theater Program from its undulating history.  Her passion precedes her and leads every student to inevitable success in the program.

Megan Glynn - joined WSPA last year.  She brings alive the concept and value of the importance of improvisation and movement discovery in our jazz dancers.

I thank our teachers who have the biggest challenge of inspiring and nurturing further the raw spirit of all our beginning students.

Taylor Ullery and Anna Carnes - joined WSPA in 2008

Proud of the WSPA Allumni that now serves in the faculty:

Reina Victoria - started training in 1993 and started teaching in 2001
Camille Edralin - started training in 1999 and started teaching in 2006
Brigitte Guldbech - started training in 1998 and started teaching in 2003
Michelle Abuyagi - started training in 1996 and started dancing in 2010
Matthew Montenegro - started training in 1998 and started teaching in 2008
Aggie Loyola - started training in 2003 and started teaching 2010

Last but not the least, I pay tribute to two beautiful people who are not teachers but have taught every person that knows them what passion, love, support, loyalty, commitment, and going that extra mile for the benefit of the greater good, are all about.

Dan and Debbie Knutson - They joined WSPA in 1991 enrolling their eldest daughter Angela, in a Ballet n' Tap Class and followed by Melissa, their youngest.  Since then, Debbie has shown admirable volunteer work which eventually lead to a full employment as the Office Manager of WSPA.    Dan is a devoted husband and father to his family and their endeavors.  WSPA is lucky to recieve the extension of that love.  The whole family continues to share their relentless love for dance and theater selflessly.  They are WSPA's Biggest Blessing!

I invite you to a Gala that celebrates the beauty, gift, and the blessing of enduring love for dance.  DONT MISS IT!!!!

3.  Dress professionally for your singing audition and have dance clothes ready for the dance call.  No street shoes please, tennis shoes are ok if you do not have dance shoes.

professional"Professional Ballet Division's 2nd Year Mission
The Professional Division's mission is to prepare students for a professional future in dance.  Students who are accepted initially are those whom we feel may have the physique possessing attributes that are generally considered requisite for professional accomplishments in classical ballet.

However, the student's history of exemplary attitude, work ethics, and commitment can outweigh the physique and will have a deciding impact on the student's acceptance to the program.  It is proven in life that pure love, determination, and hard work bring success
.

The students are accepted on a trial basis throughout the year and are evaluated by technical development, talent, and artistic merit.  The size of the class is limited to 15 only.  Students not accepted from the audition will be asked to continue to train in the Performance Program and will have a chance for acceptance as space allows.

The Professional Ballet Division will continue to evolve each year with changes and improvements in the best interest of upholding its mission.

 Urban Paradise Island Festival

Success is inevitable when everyone comes together selflessly!

The sun peeked a few times but the clouds prevailed most of the day.  Nevertheless, the energy and excitement sizzled as hundreds of people gathered in the courtyard  on April 16 to support the Island Festival.

A big thank you to directors Elizabeth Bertumen, Patrick Cruz, and Katie Kerwin for bringing their companies and students out to perform on the stage.  We thank Te Orama and Otea Api's director Anthony Manaois for leading the festival in entertainment as well as the many gifts and prizes he donated.

Parents and students who hosted games, donated food, manned the booths, invited friends and families to attend, helped set and clean up,  got dunked, and entertained, and who just plainly showed up, were all responsible for assuring the festival was a huge success.

The Island Festival has paved the way to Te Orama's success at the San Jose Fete.

We wish all the dancers of Te Orama, its drummers, singers, and its Director, Kumu Anthony Manaois, our best thoughts.  We are proud to stand behind the company's vision of representing Traditional Tahiti and we look forward to hearing all the original composition - lyrics and music - inspired by the love Anthony and his wife Natalie bear for their other home, Tahiti.

"Success is inevitable when everyone comes together selflessly."

WSPA Sweeps Most of the Over-All Awards in Spotlight

spotlightTechnique sets WSPA students apart from their competitors

The school plaque that is handed to each director shows all the routines and the awards earned.  It is displayed in the office for all to see.  Spotlight is a member of the Federation of Dance Competitions.  It would be interesting to see how WSPA ranks in the World Dance Championship Power Ranking of schools in the Pacific Region.  Click here to find out. (Note:  Last time I checked, it hasnt been updated to include the San Mateo Regional)

Technique sets WSPA students apart from their competitors.  The Individual strength achieved in their technique classes set their level of competition.  Their ability to transform themselves on stage and be totally committed and engaged in their movements make them unique.  The perfect combination of technique and artistry is what makes a beautiful performance.    WSPA's goal is to help our students achieve this individually and as an ensemble.

This was accomplished over the weekend.  WSPA students were highly recognized and awarded for their solo and ensemble routines, dominating most of the over-all awards, and earning high scores with Diamonds and Rubies.

Highest recognitions earned over the weekend were:

Studio Achievement Award - highest score reached in the entire competition by Simple Gifts, Tanguedia and APT Hip Hop scores combined.

Director's Choice - Temperate Anticipation choreographed by Lauren Main de Lucia, the favorite routine from the entire San Mateo Regional.

"Federations Peoples Choice" - APT Hip Hop choreographed by Patrick Rivera Cruz.  One "Federations Peoples Choice" Award routine is nominated at every single regional FDC competition.  The video of APT's routine will be posted on the FDC Web Site throughout the regional season. Viewers nationwide vote for their favorite routine at the conclusion of the regional season via the FDC Web Site during a specified window of time from June 13-June 24, 2011.    Click here to learn more.

Top-Overall Petite Soloist - Jasmine Cruz, Girl I Long to Be, by Tina Fargas-Newell

Top-Overall Junior Soloist and Mr. Spotlight - Tristan Brosnan, Young Matador, by Malu Rivera-Peoples

Top-Overall Teen Soloist - Miko Fogarty, Variation from Le Corsaire, coached by Victor Kabaniaev

There are more Over All awards in specific categories and divisions achieved by ensembles choreographed by Lauren Main De Lucia, Tina-Fargas Newell, Amy Beltrami, Patrick Cruz, Megan Glynn, and Katie Kerwin.  They will all soon be posted in the office and in the Spotlight website.

Congratulations to all the parents, teachers and students, your hard work has paid off once again!
