As the Vega Heads Out,
Guess Who Rolls In...

July 10 was a day for the books!

The morning began with the (temporary) departure of a good friend, the Lockheed Vega, which is painted in salute of Wiley Post's legendary "Winnie Mae." This beloved aircraft has not flown for over a decade, so it's time for "Winnie" to go into restoration which requires some disassembly for trucking, as pictured below.

We had only just waved farewell to "Winnie," when...
A humble U-Haul trailer pulled into Fantasy of Flight...

and opened its doors to reveal...

... an original Brown B-1 racer, which joins the other Golden Age speedsters
in the North Hangar. This particular aircraft has some tremendous pedigree plus it has a role to play in Kermit's children's book series as "Missy's" little sister ("Missy" is the Brown B-2, "Miss Los Angeles.") as well as being an object of delight for all Golden Age fans!

The sound of the skies above World War I battlefields is the subject of our "music" lesson today. Just tune into these two videos and compare the radically different rhythms and tones of the 160hp rotary Gnome in the Fokker versus the 180 hp 6-cylinder inline Mercedes in the Albatros.

Both of these gorgeous aircraft call Fantasy of Flight home. And we are always thrilled to hear their songs, especially when "conducted" by Kermit Weeks!

Speedy Speakeasy Arrives at Fantasy of Flight!

Speedy and Gee Bee

Another character has tumbled through time and managed a three-point landing at Fantasy of Flight. Welcome Speedy Speakeasy, Golden Age racing pilot. Speedy claims to have travelled through time just as he rounded the pylons in pursuit of the 1931 Thompson Trophy.

He was mildly disappointed not to finish the race but is tickled pink he landed at Fantasy of Flight, where he can share his love and vast knowledge of airplanes. Like his hero Roscoe Turner, Speedy is bigger than life... and has grown even bigger since he discovered today's fast food!

Wow! I know pilots must be reading this newsletter because you have some eagle eyes! Here's a reader's response to my too-hastily typed piece about the proposed Benoist stamp in the July newsletter:

"Shouldn't the date of Jannus's flight across Tampa Bay be in 1914, rather than 1904?  Or are you saying that the first airline flight took place just about two weeks after the Wright Bothers made their first successful flights on December 17th of 1903?  I don't think so!"

Gentle reader, you are so absolutely correct, and I am thoroughly shame-faced. Thanks for keeping me honest!
