C-47 N1944A Comes Home May 2 (That's Today!!!)

C-47 framed by Hangar in oshkosh

Just in time for the D-Day symposium, the journey home of  Fantasy of Flight's own D-Day veteran, C-47 N1944A, will conclude triumphantly... right about.... NOW! Following a thrilling cross Atlantic journey last summer and a several month sojourn at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, this heroic aircraft is scheduled to fly into Fantasy of Flight at about the same moment this newsletter flies through the ether to you!  The tentative schedule for arrival at Fantasy of Flight is Wednesday, May 2, at approximately 1:30 PM --- just in time for "Aircraft of the Day," the daily flight demonstration. If you are in the neighborhood, come out and say hi!

As is the case with most things, the journey has been as entertaining as the arrival. In the way of old airplanes, the path is rarely smooth. Mercurial weather, paperwork snafus, and personnel changes all conspired to make the journey home from Oshkosh plenty unpredictable. The good news is the aircraft is in perfect shape and runs like a clock!

D-Day Heroes Drop In

2012 L&L D-Day Poster

The Normandy invasion came overnight with parachute and glider landings, naval bombardments, massive air attacks, and amphibious beachfront assaults. Months in the making, it required the coordination of thousands of Allied Forces and was an operation so mammoth that once set in motion, there was no turning back.

Don't miss the chance to meet and hear firsthand from these  remarkable witnesses to history:

  • Major Clifford Kantz, U.S. Army Air Corps, C-47 pilot. Commanded D-Day paratroopers.
  • Sgt. Harold Heil, U.S. Army, 295th Combat Engineering Division. At Omaha Beach, was in advance of artillery units blowing up mine fields/building bridges.
  • PFC Paul Rancicot, U.S. Army, 66th Infantry Division
  • Lt. Hope Kirkendall, U.S. Army nurse. One of the first women to go ashore at Normandy after the Allied invasion to care for the wounded.
  • Sgt. Teddy Fisk, U.S. Army Air Corps, Ground service Unit. Built fighter bases just behind the advancing infantry divisions.

Coming June 8 & 9:

The Vietnam War was America's longest conflict and the military failure on foreign soil. Even today, the Vietnam War era is a difficult and complicated subject, both emotionally and historically. Please join us as we honor the people who proudly stood up to serve and hear their brave stories.

"More Happy than I Can
Ever Tell..."
    Evangeline, Lindy, and Spirit

"Mother Glad First for Flier's Safety," reported in the New York Times,

May 22, 1927

Detroit, May 21-- "I am grateful. There is no use attempting to find words to express my happiness," were the first words of Mrs. Evangeline Lodge Lindbergh, mother of the intrepid flier, as she received word that her famous son had safely landed his plane at Le Bourget Field, France. "Somehow, I felt all through that he would win. I was as confident as any mother could have been under the circumstances; and there were times when the difficulties which I knew he was facing depressed me. I am happy that it is over, more happy than I can ever tell. He has accomplished the greatest undertaking of his life, and I am proud to be the mother of such a boy," Mrs. Lindbergh continued.

WWII B-24 Flt engineer George Hutschenreuter and son-in-law Philip Berger
World War II B-24 Flight Engineer George Hutschenreuter and son-in-law Philip Berger dropped by to visit during the Bomber Crew Legends & Legacies. While at Fantasy of Flight, George got close to an old companion, the B-24. Lucky staff members were able to hear of George's military adventures in the 8th Air Force, which--as it turned out--were matched by his romantic ones. He met his wife-to-be in Covent Garden during his time in England.
