WASP

Over the last weekend of March, airplane enthusiasts and history fans of all ages gathered to absorb great stories and insights from WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) heroines as part of Fantasy of Flight's "Living History" series. This latest installment was aptly titled "A Passionate Pursuit" and featured scheduled panelists Betty Blake, Bea Haydu and Helen Snapp along with a surprise visit from fellow WASP, Barry Smith. Passion, courage and determination colored the stirring memories shared by these remarkable women who, during World War II, flew almost every type of military aircraft in every duty except combat. Thrilled visitors—ranging from veterans to school children—experienced laughter, inspiration and wonder in meeting these living legends and exploring their experiences in the recently premiered WASP multimedia exhibit.

"It's hard to believe that almost 70 years ago, these gutsy ladies stepped into the cockpits of fighter planes to serve their country in its time of need, and have been breaking barriers for women ever since," said Fantasy of Flight founder and creator Kermit Weeks. "It is my extreme privilege to welcome them to Fantasy of Flight to share their amazing stories first hand."

Sales Department of Magnificent Aircraft?
It's All a State of Mind

This month's Staff Spotlight shines not on an individual but on a whole department-a group of blonde bombshells who keep the attraction abuzz with activity: the Event Sales Department. This energetic and creative team produce one-of-a-kind events, tours, parties and meetings specifically tailored for individuals, groups and corporations - all with the unmistakable and utterly unique Fantasy of Flight flair.

Each of these three dynamos has a story to tell; however, we narrowed it all down to one question that reveals their inmost selves. Here's the question: If you were an airplane in the collection, what airplane would you be and why?

With a smile, they each offered up an answer:

Jennifer - Stephanie - Christine

Secrets for the Maintenance Hangar

Travel AirThe Travel Air 4000 is currently under the keen eyes and wrenches of the aircraft maintenance department, who are replacing some of the old components in the engine with more modern ones that sustain its authenticity while keeping it safe for the Boss to fly.

Everybody loves the Travel Air. Why? Mostly because this 1928 airplane represents a classic example of the round-engine biplane, slow-flying and graceful. A beautiful aircraft from a romantic era. Moreover, it boasts a fantastic Wright J5 Whirlwind engine, the same type engine Lindbergh chose for his historic Atlantic crossing.

However, what makes it truly extraordinary is its pedigree. Before separating to pursue independent interests, three highly gifted airplane designers were the brain trust of Travel Air and the developers of this wonderful airplane. Perhaps you recognize their names: Clyde Cessna, Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech.
