May 2009
| May is National Military Appreciation Month |
National Military Appreciation Month honors, remembers, recognizes, and appreciates all military personnel: those men and women who have served throughout our history and all who now serve in uniform and their families as well as those Americans who have given their lives in defense of the freedoms we all enjoy today.
Throughout the month of May, Fantasy of Flight is offering free admission to all active-duty, retired, and reserve military. Guests must present a current ID to qualify for the discount. Not valid with any other offers, discounts, annual passes, or special events. |

| The title "Ace" is reserved for fighter pilots who achieve the extraordinary feat of shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial battle. On May 2, Fantasy of Flight presented Living History: "Victory in the Sky," which saluted American World War II Fighter Aces as they reflected on their one-of-a-kind experiences in the highest and fastest moving battlefield: tearing hell-for-leather through the clouds with their guns blazing. The day was truly inspirational as guests met and learned from real American heroes. |

Swing Props & Swing Dancing:
Paul Gives Life to the Past |
Aircraft Restoration Specialist Paul Stecewycz—Fantasy of Flight's longest term employee at 19 years and counting—spends his days immersed in history, researching, and restoring the historic aircraft that fill the hangars. But his passion for the past doesn't end with aircraft. In fact, Paul feels more at home in the '30s and '40s than in the present-and his enthusiasm for the period fills every corner of his life, from his huge collection of vintage neckties and American Flyer trains to the hours he and his wife Loraine spend swing-dancing. Asked why he loves and lives this period, Paul admires the "quality and design of architecture, clothing, cars, airplanes—no plastic." And he identifies with "the patriotism and a specific American energy in the culture and the music. When we look back to when America was on top of things, we look back to that period." If he were an aircraft in the collection, which one would he be? With no hesitation, Paul responds, "the Wildcat because when it was built, it was already outclassed by other aircraft, but it continued to prove itself anyway, right up to the end of the war. It was easy to be impressive if you were a Mustang, but the Wildcat had to work for it . . . and it did." Fantasy of Flight treasures Paul's passion for the past and its preservation as living inspiration. |

Quite a few Fantasy of Flight visitors have become "frequent flyers" on the Backlot Tram tour. Why? Some just love the tour guides. (And what's not to love there?) Others have figured out that the tram tour is the only way to gain access to the Maintenance Hangar. Those folks are very likely drawn across the field to visit a big guy named "Joe" who lives there: Fantasy of Flight's glorious B-24, truly one of the most spectacular and valuable aircraft in the collection—a holy grail for many aviation enthusiasts. Before it was called "Joe" (for a film salute to Joseph Kennedy's heroic service), our B-24 bore a different nose art theme, "Delectable Doris." However, as the tour guides hasten to remind us, "Doris" was a lovely lass who wore little more than a smile. So, for the time being at least, it will remain "Joe," even if not-so-bashful "Doris" is only a smile away.
To see "Delectable Doris," stroll through the Cover-to-Cover display that links the North and South Hangars at Fantasy of Flight. The original nose art is featured on the cover of the Summer 1978 edition of Air Classics Quarterly Review.
