"I believe stress is a factor in any bad health."
-Christopher Shays  (Connecticut Congressman)

Life's stress affects health

Psychological well-being and physical well-being are intertwined. Your psychological outlook, ability to handle the stress of life and self-care all interact with your body's immune system and physiological responses. In fact, research shows there is a significant savings in medical costs or those who have had mental health treatment.

Therapists and other mental health professionals coach patients on how to reduce psychological stress, which in turn reduces medical complaints. Research shows that up to 60 percent of all medical visits are by the "worried-well" for non-medical reasons. The percentage is higher when the number includes patients who are having trouble handling stress and have developed physical symptoms.

The frantic pace of life cause many people to inadequately plan their nutrition, exercise and time for social support. As a result, their immune systems can become depressed and they become more susceptible to illness. The entwining of mind/body actions is reflected in the study of psychoneuroimmunology. It is a recognized fact that your well-being dictates a holistic approach to health.

This is being recognized by medical schools. Numerous studies also documented the dual approach-- appropriate physical care and psychological intervention-- reduced patient physical symptoms, reduced hospitalizations and significantly improved patients' well-being. Make a commitment to yourself in 2011. Improve your quality of life with a holistic approach, recognizing the mind/body interaction.

  • Make time for adequate exercise.
  • Place a priority on good nutrition.
  • Focus on recognizing your personal strengths.
  • Include time to be with caring people.
